My Name is Jed and I'm a Washington transplant from the east coast. Been here since August of 2008 and loving it. I'm mostly a kayaker, but also Open canoe, and am a seasoned raft guide. I started guiding in NC, then moved on to TN, WV and finally the White Salmon river in Southern WA. I live in Olympia, and love the Olympic peninsula. I really enjoy creeking, it is one of the only things in my life that challenges me on all levels, physically, mentally, Teamwork, group dynamics and (sometimes) emotionally. It forces the individual to focus intently on the line, but at the same time forces the paddler to live in harmony with the flow of the water. Sometimes you have to fight and other times you have to flow, it's a delicate balance between success and failure. And in those times where you need to resort to plan B... well... sometimes that can be fun too. In addition to creeking I also love to paddle "long boats", when everyone else (with some exceptions) is paddling their stubby little play boats, I'm rocking out in my 10' 10" Dagger outburst. There is something beautiful about the way that those long and fast boats cut through the water, the attain and ferry unlike any modern boat. Also there is something really fun about styling a huge pirouette or ender. In addition to the long boats I also enjoy the Open canoe, for a couple of reasons. First it's a completely different means of getting down the river and as a river runner I want to become proficient in all styles of river travel (raft, kayak, Canoe, cat, R-1, R-2, Rowing, big water, low volume) and round out my skill sets. Secondly having one blade forces you to look at rapids in a different way than you do in a kayak, I plan my strokes much more, and work on that "dry" line. Also, as my friend Kris put it, "it makes you feel like a pioneer", there is a historical significance to the Canoe, particularly the Open boat. Hope you meet you someday. Until then... -Jed "The line will become apparent"
