Putin DetailsFrom Highway 14, drive a few miles up the Klickitat on Highway 142) and take a left onto the bridge that crosses the river. Start scouting here. You can drive a little farther upstream if the road is open and you don't want to hike your boat. |
Takeout DetailsThe bridge (see putin). You can also paddle another mile downstream to an easier takeout. |

Other IssuesReports from low water are that there are severe undercuts in play. Scout out everything before committing. At medium flows, a swim could be very exhausting to say the very least, if not fatal. |
Run DescriptionAt 3000 cfs Ben describes this gorge as IV+ big water with class V consequences. Except for the first rapid (recommended portage) He did not feel like undercuts were in play. It sounds like it looks much worse with less water.
It was very easy to hike along the river and scout it all out before committing. There are some big waves and holes but nothing unmanageable for those with solid skills. This is a neat section of whitewater that is worth checking out if you are in the area.

Its actually a great raft run. Check it out between 1500 and 2000 cfs your first time. Great with an R3 configuration, but each rafter really needs to know how to raft without being told what to do, highsiding if needed before anyone needs to yell "highside". Talk to Hans or Tom about it. The three of us did it when it was running about 1950cfs (I think). You want enough water to carry you through the pinch near the end of the gorge. I'd go back and hardshell it, but if you got squirreled around and flipped in the wrong spot, you may get fatigued trying to roll up somewhere that doesn't flush you downstream. Make your own calls when you scout and be careful.
