Yo...
Happy New Year to all of you Robe-aholics and "social Robers" alike (You don't have to be COMPLETELY addicted to Robe to be included in the mix and enjoy the fun) --

A few of us kicked off the new year with a trip down this wonderfull canyon, and in fact ended 2008 with a few runs down it as well. There's still a healthy amount of snow to kick through to get to the put-in, as well as at Landslide.

Garbage used to be so smooth that I wondered what the big deal was, but since those 'lil floods in November, it is deserving of its name--scout it thouroughly, especially at lower flows!!

Anyway, here's to starting off 2009 right with Robe:

I plan to keep an eye on the guage and run it regularly.
To those of you with rafts: I'd like to R2 it sometime.
To the CAT BOATERS out there-- Be sure to get a hold of me when you want to go, I'd love to join you guys out there sometime!

Happy New Year!

Next weekend, Jan 10th & 11th, may be good, perhaps with flows in the 5' range. That's enough encouragement for me to want to activate the Robe Watch!

Who's up for some Robe maneuvers next weekend?

Robe ont tuesday 1/13 anyone? Should be dropping into the zone, and may be good on Wed as well. After that, though, it's gonna dry up this week, so get it while it's hot!

Had to sit that session out. Better to keep working and be ready for the next one(s). Heard you guys had a clean run (no major wood issues) and  encountered some minor changes in a few spots...

So what's keeping "the robe" hovering and not dropping out?  Hard to imagine much much snowmelt happening right now.  Might be interested in a run sometime this weekend if she holds up.

Yeah, it's strange isn't it? The actual flow was consistent with the gauge when I ran it Wednesday.
I'm planning on a quick lap at 2 tomorrow.

I was wondering that myself when I looked at CC this afternoon.  I decided that with all the rain last week on top of the snow melt, the ground must be pretty well saturated and all that water is just leaking out into the stilly.

I heard there is an inversion happening.  I would imagine there is some melt coming from above.  Might be wrong though.

Evans, do you want to go tomorrow, not sure about 2 but maybe 11?

ROBE WATCH ACTIVATE!!!

I'm in Seattle and I gotta tell ya: Right now I'm seeing a lot of people walking around with umbrellas.

About the current flows: the PP guages are reading 4.2, yet I went to AW and their posted guage reading is 5.09

I'm inclined to leave town right now and go run it. But I won't . Tomorrow is wednesday though, and I think a Robe Trip may be in the cards. There is another option, too.

Regardless, I'm increasingly optimistic that we'll have at least a little bit of water to host  some of our out of town friends when they show up Friday for Cody's premiere.

Another round of raindances, everyone!

anyone interested in thursday?

Well, First the Bad news:  my work schedule just took a dive. This is bad because it potentially jeopardizes my future spring runnoff time. I really want to work as much as I can right now, esspecially with a broken economy.

But now that I don't have to work Wednesday OR Thursday, you can guess the Good News!

Old Man Robe was an Ass Kicker last week during that brief spike!! He kicked my can ALL OVER the river!

This coming week, who knows?
The forecast calls for a spike between Monday and Tuesday, with levels around 5.5'

AJ-call me if you get that time off.

Great day on the robe at just slightly below 5 feet. Thanks for coming along Jp, it was great to paddle with you.
One note in particular about the run at 5 feet concerning 20 foot waterfall. DO NOT RUN THE CENTER LINE on the second boof. Your face may smash into a rock, which is not fun. Best to go around on the right side. Seriously, do not run the usual center boof on the second part of the rapid. Just dont.

Well I managed ok, but you're right: chronicle this spout as another minor change that is actually much more of a major change at 5' or below! something must've shifted above the boof ( I suspect that small boulder that is sorta in the way as you aproach the lip. More water must be diverted somewhere.

Guess I'm giving up on trying to catalog the various, ever changing aspects of the river bed in there. Although we may be ok till the fall now. we'll see.

Yeah, sorry your line was so dry (mine was too- I felt like I was boofing a dry notch between the two rocks. It might even be possible to pin in there at this low flow now. Always stay alert in there, everyone!

Great paddling with you, too Jonathan. That was a fun trip.

BTW: The gauge forecast is indicating some possible Robelyness this weekend. Mid 5's sat & sun if the forecast is correct.

For those about to Robe we salute you! Anyone interested in hitting it up this weekend, give me a call on my cell. If you don't have it yet, PM me or somethin before Friday.

Once again---
any interest in a Robe Run on Sunday??? Saturday looks a bit huge according to the forecast, and after my last run on Robe above 6' (which involved about 4 different ass kickings in 4 different holes) I think I'll keep my visits to the under 6' range.

Tomorrow is also a possibility (Friday, 1pm-ish). Rob and I will check in with each other tonight. But again the graph shows Robe shooting straight up, so we'll have to see.

So give me a shout if you want to route!

I'd be interested in the Robe.  I live in Vancouver, but would make the drive for sure.  I paddled it in Jan. with a bunch of Seattle dudes - maybe it's you guys.

AJ-- Maybe the graph isn't so accurate, but I humbly admit that it's looking a bit steep for me. Call Rob, he wants to go at about the time you  mentioned: today, 1pmish.

Last time I was in there above 6' Old Man Robe kicked my can around:
T1: major ass kickin in a huge hole
T2: major ass kickin in a huge hole
Last Sunshine: you guessed it: major ass kickin in a huge hole
At this point I could barely catch my breath! But I sure as hell didn't see the logic in swimming! Yeah, things subsided by the time I was above faceplant, but damn, I was feeling like maybe I needed a bigger boat, or bigger arms, bigger lungs, bigger balls or all of the above!

Then somewhere in the boogie water above 20' Cat's Paw, I got my ass Kicked again, this time pulled out of my hip pads! I rolled up and impulsively planted a few strokes to catch up with the group, then noticed my skirt was off and my cockpit was filled to the rim with brim! Paddled to the bank and emptied my boat.

Having said that, it was still a fun if frightening day in Robe Canyon, but I think I'll wait to catch the downslide of the spike-- Sunday may be good.

Yeah, Stefano- I think I remember you with the Vancouver Crew.
I think I'm going to shoot for Sunday. But the Stilly drainage is senseitve lately, seemingly on a hair trigger. The forecasts have been off all week, changing everyday.
It could be that it'll drop out of the zone quickly. Stay tuned.

This post is being posted to...

a) remind folks that Robe should be at a superb (if lower) level on Sunday, and to announce that some paddlers have expressed a willingness to drive some distance to run it--- who's willing to Rally the Robe for a solid out of town paddler? (Unfortunately I think I likely have other plans and can't go.)

and,
b) To let D4 know that this thread ain't goin away!!!

oh how sophmoric, it's true!

But seriously-- If the forecast is accurate, this coming tuesday through thursday are worth "Watching"-- I can potentially baot any of those days this week.

Whoever else can get out, contact me about running Robe. If you need my cel #, PM me by Monday afternoon so I can get it to you.

Aj-- if you have that time off, try to let me know in advance so I can form some plans around your schedule. Brian may be able to go thurs.

So I injured my Toe, and had to have the nail yanked from the split sausage meat of my Big Toe.
It hurts a bit at times to walk on in tight fitting shoes, i.e.booties.

The RN's recommendation:

-Soak Toe in cold Robe Water
-Take two advil and one shot of wiskey
-Repeat for two days

doctor's order's!

Robe Watch was activated last night--

We have a trip out there today:
Meet at the take out at 12:00 Noon. Flow should be a decent medium low.

-oh...
and last ime out was out there I discovered a new little spot that can get you if you're not careful:

Below Catcher's Mit, there's a rapid with three routes-
left, center, and right between and around boulders. Class III+ or IV-  flavored.
I took the right channel (the "main route") and was complacent. On the right the water curves along the R. Right wall until it joins the middle of the river again. Never thought anything of it in the past, but this time I managed to slide along the wall and get shoved into a pocket in the wall big enough to trap my boat!

No big deal, but good to know about. I just turned my stern out into the current and back ferried out.

I'm gonna call that rapid " Lil Boat Catcher" from now on!
Or maybe "Short Stop" is a better name, to echoe the baseball theme from the rapid upstream?

Found some teeth on Robe I've never noticed before. Actually, I can't take the credit-someone else found those teeth, and got bit.

So I updated the description for Robe. Anyone else who knows the run can edit the description, too. I've given up trying to keep track of all the changes, as frequently as they occur. But maybe now that spring's here, the run will settle down a bit.

Check the alerts if you haven't been on it since last fall. Big changes after those 3 floods we got.

Really what it boils down to is, with Robe Canyon, no matter how well you think you know it, you should never assume you know it like the back of your hand. Some changes are obvious to the eye, and you can understand how those changes effect the kinetic behavior of a given rapid or feature. Subtle changes also occur that may be imperceptible to the eye
(And I'm an observant MuthaF#@ker when it comes to rivers!), yet affect current patterns or
the geometric shapes of features or whole rapids.

It's almost never the same run twice!!
