This is a crazy event that I don't think is going on any more :( but here is a video of the Ocoee Headhunt for your enjoyment.

There's a pumpkin chase going on on the white salmon November 1st. Looks like it's going to be a very similar setup to the headhunt.

Nate Helms is my hero! He was the original Dark Strider and there is nothing that can compare with the Ocoee Headhunt! He created that legend with his grassroots community effort. When he headed off to school, the southeast saw a sad end to the headhunt (2005, I think, was the last year). I'm originally from the SE and when I moved to the Pacific Northwest it was the one event that I wanted to see resurrected out here. So come on out Nov. 1st! Good times!

I too am a southern from Georgia and paddled many a year back there before heading here. I'm not sure about Nate Helms but I was good friends with Nathan Mills (the Strider) and Chuck Kirk and I'm sure that Nathan was the originator of the head hunt. We talked it all over with them and helped give ideas on what prizes to give out. Nathan moved to Alaska a few years ago.

Thanks Courtney for the clarification! No wonder I was having a hard time tracking him down. If you still speak to him, please let him know that he sure does throw an amazing paddling event! And judging by all the halloween paddles that are happening across the country this year, lots of other paddlers feel the same way, too!
Happy paddling!
