Before putting on I was concerned about having to paddle under the vail as well. However once you get there you can see from the scout on Frustration what the curtain looks like. When we were there it was way more managable than the NBN 2 footage. It wasn't even really an issue to get under it.
The Salmon River Gorge I think has a lot of folklore sourrounding it. If you go with someone who knows the run, with a good medium-low flow, it's an amazing day. You can portage almost all of the rapids and will experience one of the most incredible river canyons I've ever seen. However this is a SOLID Class V run because of the elements and remoteness of the run. That being said it is nearly all pool-drop style rapids that are all easily scoutable. Have fun and if you're up for it this run it should be on any class V boaters hit list.

How's your back feeling, Paul&Cody? Guess there's not a lot of difference in the consequence b/w a 30' and 80' drop, or is there?! Well done. Glad you guys got it done in good style.

Final Falls Update.
Yesterday I went back in with Keel Brightman and we decided before hiking in that we were going to jump Final so we wouldn't have to take a climbing rope. The hike in and run went smooth with the exception of jumping Final Falls. We jumped from river right and into the whitewater at the base of the falls. I hit bottom about 8-10 ft. under water and luckily it was sand so it wasn't too bad. Keel landed about a foot further left of me and said he hit pretty hard. Luke Spencer and Mike Northrop said they felt the bottom on the jump last year, but I thought that they didn't get out far enough from the wall so jumped way out yesterday and still hit. Until last year this jump has been good to go as long as you step out. Not sure what's going on in there, maybe sediment build up in the pool... But I don't think the jump off the right side of Final Falls is safe anymore. Just a heads up for anyone considering it. ------------- www.gorgehits.com |
