Hope you all have been practicing for the freestyle event this coming weekend.  The Wenatchee was eerily quiet this weekend, so I suspect people were either practicing on flatwater or are going to be doing a last minute cramfest, banking that the judges are grading a curve (we're not).

KTW right now is getting extra credit for demonstrating mastery of his skills on the wave with his video post.

Here's looking for at least 10k at Rodeo Hole on Saturday.  Make sure you register early Saturday and get your bib.  The freestyle event is starting promptly at 1 o'clock because there's beer to be drank back at the park afterwards.

Cheers

Looks fine to me, 7-8k on grannies is awesome. Just a little tough for spectating...

Date Posted: 04 Jun 2007 at 9:01pm
Grannies has great spectator access. Not quite like rodeo hole but there is a nice bank and bridge upstream that get used. I would prefer to see it on Trinity for a change but that is unlikely considering flows. I still doubt that I will even get out there ... I would still like to see air and thats trinity baby!

Would all of the categories for freestyle be in the same place? I'm not too keen (this year anyway...) on catching Trinity and having it actually matter whether I screw up or not...
Turkey Shoot?!

Haha, you should come out, James. Anyway, there is plenty of air to be had at the old lady.

Date Posted: 04 Jun 2007 at 9:41pm
oh no no... I am probably going to go regardless that is not really the question. The question was if I was going to be out there as in Competing... I might not be in a boat for a good week or two until I can walk with out a limp and getting in the boat doesn't hurt. But like Rob M says... I don't boat cause it feels Good Champ!

Well see.

As for Ashley's Comment >>> WAHOO thats a winner. I would back that in a second. If there is other waves open that are more appropriate for beginners why not. Make a sub category. Maybe like oldschool or surfers or something for the average surfer???

Glad to hear it. Maybe we can do some lobbying. If its at Turkey Shoot, I'll be in for sure!

There are already are seperate categories for beginner, intermidiate, and expert. I think that would be awesome if they put them on different waves to get everyone out there.

All, the freestyle event will be in the same location for everyone.  The reason.  It's much easier to organize and everyone will be mixed in together, ie beginners and experts paddling one after another.  We're trying to make it so everyone gets cheered on.  Trust me, the classes get split up and it's not near as happy a scene to watch.

As for the site.  Right now it's at Rodeo.  The great thing about that site is that you get a wave and a hole in the same location.  The folks that want to step up can strut their stuff in Rodeo Jr. and the more mellow crowd can hit the wave in Rodeo proper.  Either way there is some great action.

As for going to Trinity, doubtful.  Although I've been toying with the idea of a surf off for the top 3 finishers in expert/pro class at this spot.  Just a little something to factor into the scores.  If this happened it would be filmed and shown at the party Saturday night.

And to the beginners and intermediates and kids out there regarding Rodeo Hole.  Step up and come out and have fun.  My wife was the only woman to enter the event last year and she's a beginner playboater, even though there were more advanced women playboaters on the river AND watching.  She won with a grand total of 4 points (2 spins) on Rodeo Hole.  I'll tell you from sitting in the eddy as safety boater, the crowd was throwing a lot of support and encouragement at the beginner and intermediate folks when they came up.  Maybe more so than the expert/pro class.  I think it's a relational thing, but very cool to see.  And by the way she's going to enter again this year.

With all that said.  James, if you're going to sideline yourself for the event I could use you as a judge.  And for anyone else out there interested I can use a judge and scribes.  If you're interested let me know and make sure you sign up in the park as a volunteer for the freestyle on Saturday morning.

Cheers.  Now stop posting and get out there and practice.

I think I'll be coming over with the wife this Fri/Sat and do a little drinking...er boating.  Are the eddies packed all day over there or is it possible to get some quality ride time?

Anyone up for Icicle or Little Wenatchee?

Ashley, there is a great video by Ken Whiting Called Playboating with K.W.. It teaches you body positions and paddle movment's and has great preseantation verbaly and by progression steps ( through moves. ) you should check it out. I'v got a burnt copy that skips on parts but you could borrow it. But nothing better just trying. This at least gives you a visual and some kind of explanation of body keinastetics...did you make it out on sunday ?? I didn't see ya..

In my opinion, EJ's playboating tapes are better than Ken's.

Just make sure you get the ones he made while with jackson kayak, not while he was still with wave sport. Those ones are probably out of date at this point.

IMNSHO...
  • EJ is stronger, more aggressive, and driven
  • Ken Whiting is / was a better paddler - hands down.

Have at it ;-)

I would agree. Ken has an amazingly fluid motion and great timing. He is a great teacher too. He paddles one of the worst paddles on the market but you gotta love the guy for sticking with them forever...

Ken's instruction is WAY better.  EJ is a wicked good paddler, but I think Ken is better with the flatwater...  The only person I've seen better than him on flatwater is James (on a good day... )

How about a down river race on lower Icicle... say the dam down to the final drop.

Sure?

We'll see what the levels do.  If it drops lower, the beginners will for sure get spilt out and use another feature.  Rodeo Jr will still be going and offers great hole material.

Posted By: Ellingferd
Date Posted: 07 Jun 2007 at 2:21pm
if the levels are going to be around the mid 7,000's then will the spot still be rodeo? as a local boater i can say that at those levels, grannies will be the best wave on this side of the mississippi, let alone the wenatchee. plus, the upper rodeo hole is pretty shallow and angled to surfers right at that level
