| I have a photo of that same whirlpool in my bathroom from kayak session. Anytime I am feeling a bit constipated I just dwell on that swell and then things start moving well. |

Pretty amazing where athletes in this sport are pushing into. Scary and amazing. Ben Marr just ran the last un-run rapid on the Stikine too. I read the Congo river is 700 feet deep! At this point in history, humans are doing things on this planet that can't be undone. I suppose it could be said it has always been this way, but this dam is on a scale that is just... unnecessary and irresponsible. The Congo has life in it that exists nowhere else on earth. I realize that part of the world is quite effed up, but c'mon!! It brings back all the feelings I had about the Ashlu dam going in. Take your money and get the F outta MY WOODS, bitch!!
It just seems like the most backwards thing I've ever heard of. In 50 years what will be left to squeeze out of this planet? Probably nothing, so a search will begin for another 'clean energy' source. I see, not too far off in the distance, the movie The Matrix becoming a reality. So I watched the full movie (downloadable on itunes, awesome!)the other night and it seems interesting that they had a bunch of extra safety gear like inflatable life jackets, extra air, cockpit condom thingys, hand paddles strapped to the deck, yet three out of four paddlers are wearing jackets with the bare minimum of flotation (greenjackets).
Weren't the bad asses of the 70's making their jackets with upwards of 35 lbs of flotation? Either way, I suppose a swim could very well be a death sentence. Yeah I know that the river is powerful but it seems like any extra would help, at least mentally? |

So, it looks like there will be a premiere of this in Tacoma next week. And perhaps one in Seattle too? Anyone have any word on this?

Yeah, last I checked the Tacoma premiere is 10/25 at the Grand theater, and the Seattle Premiere is 10/26 at Mccaw Hall in the Seattle Center. I've seen it twice now, and it is amazing. Really cool to see not just your regular kayak porn but also a great story about the river, it's history, and then to watch these four guys break it down and run it for a first (and probably last thanks to the damn) descent. Also, quick plug, while you can download from Itunes I believe its helps out the athletes more if you buy from them. go to ingaproject.com to buy:) |

Re: Giant Mystery Moves: truly monstrous and horrifying to contemplate. I'm quite content to stick to my quaint little trickles of familiar runs here in Washington. Definitely inspired though, like you said, Bret, by where these guys are taking the sport.
Re: Dam-nation and the Matrix. We are already Damned, along with the Congo and all those massive projects in China as well, and already living in Mateix 1.2 or so. We have long since relingquished control of our politics, so what else do we expect? Re: cockpit condom thingys and PFDs... I believe Mr. Bradt referrs to his invention as a "Chastity Belt". Ask for it by name when it hits the shelves and becomes the next to be added to the growing list of "essential items" on the gear list. Oh how I long for the simple days when a whitewater kayaker only needed one hand to check off the "five essentials" before leaving the driveway. Come to think of it, I miss the days when the economy was vibrant enough for a grasshopper like me to have a driveway, bringing us back up to the Matrix... As far as the PFDs, well, these guys have and use what is available to them. There is a point where high float pfds simply aren't ergonamic enough for a serious whitewater kayaker: too bulky. Their solutions seem more appropriate. Afterall, you don't really need that extra flotation till you swim, right? The boat otherwise provides that (although its limitations are plainly evident by that photo) Why not have the auxilery floatation inflate when you need it? Awesome article in that issue of kayak session. Groundbreaking. Haven't seen the trailer or anything-- think Ima try to make it to one of the premiers... |

| One of the details I couldn't get over while looking through the photos, were the ocean-like waves and surges in the river. There look to be some truly huge waves rippling out in opposing directions that would seem to be a struggle to paddle among. As rivers pulse and surge, they all contain these reactionary "ripples", its just that, on the rivers we paddle at out accustomed scales, these "ripples" are generally beneath notice to us. |

Does anyone have info on the Seattle showing? I have Googled all over the place and can't find anything, on the McCaw Hall website there are no events listed for Oct. 26. The entire premier appears to be mid-mystery move - or else maybe I don't know how to work the InterWeb.
