Hey Mike:
Won't be able to make it up there today - but I was wondering if you could take a quick look at the water level relative to the "gauge rock' (at the base of the takeout bridge on the river-left side, picture at link below) and post your impression of whether the flow feels high, low, etc.

Based on a few runs out there myself - I felt like if there was a pretty good correlation between the water level and the character of the run, but I'd like to get some feedback on that to see if that seems reasonable to other folks
Water just touching the rock = low, water midway up the rock = medium. Water to the top of rock = either high side of medium or high. Rock buried = high.

got out there yesterday, run two riverwide pieces of wood, both were there last year. First is below first rapid below triple drop, and second is in the flats before the first bridge. First is duckable but not ideal, second is a mandatory portage, there is a sweeper in the flats above the second bridge but you can get around on RR. Have a good run. Yesterday was a really nice level, high but still good.

Hey Jed, I looked at the river page and your recent edits and it seems the link to the new gauge is going to the SF stilly gauge, not the SF Sky.

Not this time, we scouted and it was clean but there were only two of us and it was def higher than last year and looked stompy in a few places, plus the river wide tree was looking like more of an issue. The one duckable spot basically set you up to drop into a backed up hole with bad angle and no speed. Just putting in at that tree was good enough for me.

For the sake of running laps I plan on putting on just above the third bridge from the takeout.

yeah... I am still planning on heading up there. My wife and boy are going to help with shuttle so if you are thinking of heading out let me know and I'll slow things back a little. I think we should be there around 4:20 or so. :) Having some co. is always a good thing. I check that rock you posted up Jay. I've never used it before but sounds like a good spot to check.

haha ... j would love to start driving! Jay, I'm not sure about the guage rock. I always look downstream from the bridge where to the two rocks you can boof over are and determine from that. So, tonight I'd call the level a happy medium, which I think means the rock under the bridge on river L was dry on top 2-3" below. There are some numbers spray painted on the bridge concrete ... and they suggest that the Rapid runs several feet higher. tonignt was like 2' and the hash marks on the bridge go to 5'! That would put the river in the trees !

I always go off the boof cluster in the center of the creek just downstream of the bridge just like Mr. Harms says. If the boof looks juicy wet enough to be fun, I figure its roughly medium. There should be lots of whitewater and very few uncovered rocks if you are shootin for medium. Some waves breaking at chest height.
And, it should be a rapid kind of experience. If you are scraping more than a few places, well, you ain't getting the namesake of the run now are ya?

Anyone headed Rapid way tomorrow (saturday)?
Haven't had me any Rapid in a few years and would love to get a few laps on that. Guessing it should be in but on the lower side of medium based on past runs.
