has anyone shipped or flown with a boat back from the grand canyon?
it looks like alaskan and us air have flights from phoenix to seattle and will accomodate kayaks. but i'm not so sure about tieing a boat on top of a rental car.
ideally, i want to hang out in AZ for an extra day or two before heading back to seattle.
another option is shipping. what kind of place do i look for for that?

Forward air will ship for 100 and you can put it on most planes for 100 bucks just print out there policy for boats and take it with you. Sometimes they will hassle you when trying to bring your kayak.

I used Greyhound to ship a boat from South Florida to Virginia Beach, VA. That wourked out pretty well and was les than $100. I also flew Alaskan Airlines with two kayaks and a checked paddle. They were AWESOME! $100 bucks a piece for the boats and I think they let me check my paddle for free because they felt bad for me.

I've flown kayaks on Alaskan out of Seattle twice. The first time they didn't charge for oversize, and the second time I think it was $50 add'l. Despite all the horror stories out there I've found flying Alaskan with a kayak to be stress and hassle free. Packaging the boat well and adding strap handles (to make it easy to carry) helps a lot, as well as keeping the weight below 50 lbs.

This summer I flew from Salt Lake City to Seattle on Southwest and I brought a Large Rockstar with me. They only charges me $50 for the kayak. It was a good deal and nice to know that the boat wasn't to far outta reach. Not sure about shipping.

I used Forward Air to ship a creek-boat to NY and back and it was ~$110 each way. Dropped it off in Federal Way, a few days before the trip and picked it up a few days after. Very easy, very good service (tracking, etc).
It looks like they have a location in Phoenix.

As far as packing the boat on a rental car is concerned, we had pretty good luck with the foam and strap sort of roof-racks. Between the curve of the car's roof and the rocker it was impossible to keep the hull from touching (and scraping) the roof, but that's easy enough to take care of with a foam sleeping pad, etc.
