Straight up: to those of you who are new to Washington but not new to whitewater, yall oughtta be moblizing this week to boat. Weeks like this almost make me wish I was still unemployed. Almost. But the next few days will be esspecially good in the Sky drainage to catch some tribs, regardless of your skill level... Class III boaters with solid rolls and solid read n run abilities should check out the Beckler. Class IV boaters: The Foss and The Rapid make good combos with highwater Sky runs. The Miller is cool too, just really short and maybe got some wood. Class V boaters: Top Tye, and wherever else you want to explore up in there, but you guys n girls rarely need encouragement with your liquid frenzies. Anyway look at them guages. I am new to WA but not too new to boating. Just got here from Colorado a couple weeks ago and have only managed to hit the NF Nook, that iv+ stretch. I'm practically unemployed at the moment and need to do some more exploring so I'm open to paddle most anything around here within my comfort zone. The NF nook is the only WA boating i've done so help a guy out and show him around ;) If anybody wants to hit the Foss, Rapid R or Canyon creek I'd love to do some warming up on those! Gimme a shout! I live at Smokey Point/Marysville so I'm close to lots of stuff. Oh and i'm Down to paddle the Sky or Beckler too! I wanna see whats out there. I think my comfort level tops out around classIV, but still looking to explore what's up this weekend. Also, I think my lack of boat selection (only boat is a WS Fuse) has me tied to less dramatic runs, but I'm also eyeballing a few things for this weekend. Really would like another Sky run, also amped for Green and Snoqualmie. Posted By: BRoss Date Posted: 12 Oct 2011 at 7:55pm More experienced paddlers might have a better sense of this, but my experience with the Foss is that it requires higher flows on the Sky to be ata good runnable flow, during the fall rains compared to snowmelt in the spring. In other words, it might be good at 10K on the Sky in the spring, but might be boney in the fall, depending on where the rain falls etc. Sorry for the rambling run-on sentences...been at work too long... ------------- "That boated a lot better than it looked." When we did the Tye it was 5" above the stick gauge at the take out first lap and 3" above the second lap. I think the flow was 10-12k on the Sky. That's about right for winter flows or maybe even a tad higher than what is typical because the snow level was high (43 at Stevens Pass). In the summer at those flows, it would be much higher. In the summer the Foss would have plenty of water at 10-12k, that's even pushing a class V rating for that run. While in the winter 10-12k might not even bring the Foss up enough for a low water run.
