Hey y'all,
Has anyone been down yet this year? If so, what's the wood situation like? Also, I heard some kind of rumor about it being a no-go because of construction work on the road up or some bullsh*t. Any truth to that?
Thanks!
-Matt

My understanding is there is no way to access the take-out. Also meaning you cannot park and hike up the trail.

They are preparing to remove the dams: http://www.nps.gov/olym/naturescience/dam-removal-overview.htm

Fish said it would basically be a 5mi hike up to the Whiskey Bend trailhead, where you'd normally park and start the 8.5 mi hike.

In other words, unless you want to nearly double your hike (or turn an 8.5 mi hike into a 13.5mi hike) , you pretty much oughtta just wait a year.

Makes me glad I got in there in 2010. Lookin forward to returning. Hopefully in 2012 if the world doesn't end like everyone says its goin to.

Ah, Rats. Thanks for the heads up. Was it free of wood when you all went last year? Here's to hoping a new, awesome gorge opens up next year where the lake used to be!

I've heard some rumors of groups going in but most of us are putting this off until next year. Stoked that it's not actually "bullsh*t" that the road is closed: they are removing dams!
Last year there was a log in Rica Canyon (2nd canyon) right below Goblin's Gate. At lower flows it wasn't possible to paddle over it,to avoid dealing with it was necessary to climb out of the canyon.

I think that it would still be worth the hike. Just make it into a three day trip. There is a picture of the log that ben is talking about in my picture gallery. Kind of a sketchy spot with a lot of current. The only other wood I can think of was at the bottom of Nightmare.

If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there.
