Has anyone been down the grand canyon in the dead of winter?  what is it like?  is it miserably cold or if you have a good drysuit no problem.

i was applying for a permit and i figured applying for a winter trip is more likely to get chosen.

Here, this will show you 30 year temperature averages at Phantom: http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?azphan

It's gonna freeze and might not get super warm during the day. We did a Nov trip last year and temps were good. All boils down to what you're looking for -- the cool temps are great for hiking and exploring up away from the river. If you want to tan and run some rapids in your bikini, not so much.

it sounds cool to be down there in the winter when there are less people, you can have fires and there are no motorboats.

i was just trying to gauge if it would be unbearably cold, or pretty doable. winter boating in the northwest is fun, but i wouldnt want to boat 20 days in a row in the northwest in the dead of winter.

I have always felt weird in a bikini anyways

Fires kick ass. I bet by late December finding wood is a bit of a challenge, but probably still doable.

Peter,
Here are my two cents.  I think that you would want really good gear.  Your drysuit will not dry overnight....it will freeze, so that would be challenging.  The days are near their shortest of the year, and the sun will not shine into the canyon every day as it is lower in the sky.  I did a February strip last year and it was da bomb yo. Give it one more month.  Same desolate canyon, lack of people and motor boats and lazy days.  Plenty of firewood along the banks (driftwood) and much warmer daytime temps...near 70 some days.  I think that the ideal trip would be feb/march.  If you get a permit...you could invite me and I bet that we could have a swell time.

Jonboy,

You did a "February strip"? Are you making some side money that we don't know about?

My brother did a December Grand trip last year. They put on Dec 26th, 2010 and were on the river for the record cold spell that hit Colorado/Utah area. Temps got near zero F. Some of the pics I saw of their raft were like the crab boats in Alsaka. They had to break ice off the boat and frame after running the rapids. The splashes were freezing to gear and the boat pretty quick.  Like John said, gear freezes at night. My brother did mention it would warm up during the day and be pleasant.

Jonboy,

You should give up on your dreams of being a stripper.  You look high mileage and your thighs are fat.  Just sayin.

I did a December trip in 2009, and I am going back this December. There is a small group of people that get winter permits every year. There are definitely some advantages to going in the off season.

When I went the average temperature was in the low to mid sixties during the day, and low forties at night. Only three nights out of 19 were below freezing. There was a total of five other groups on the river while we were there. A couple of the groups had people who do a lot of winter trips, and they said that on average the winter I was there was slightly colder than usual. That being said, prepare for the worst weather. People do get trips that fall into a 20 day cold snap.

The biggest advantage was the lack of people. Ranger Dave told us that in the peak season there are 10,000 people a night camping in the canyon. Including our trip, we had to compete with 47 people. There was ample raft parking at all the points of interest, and competition for campsites was non existant. We were always happy to see another group on the water. By comparison this was my trip leader's fifth trip, and he said on every other trip there was animosity between groups over space.

The downside to a winter trip really was not the temperature, but the short days. You have to plan your day pretty well to both make miles, and see the sights.

The only thing you can burn that you didn't haul down the river with you is drift wood. It was plentiful.

Don't give up on your dreams Jon! Remember, most of SI's swimsuit issue is shot in the winter!
