Alex Honnold is a statistical abnormality.  He appears to be far and away the best free solo rock climber ever.  It's just really hard to imagine.  For all you climbers, ex-climbers out there, you'll need some chalk just to keep your hands from dripping while you watch this...well except for Morales.

Hopefully this link stays live long enough for y'all to watch it.

Hey Dave   thanks for posting    had herd of his soloing but hadnt seen any video

I remember 10 years ago being WAY happy to redpoint Moonlight  and do Halfdome mostly free with little aid. I could not imagine being up those places  with no rope.
Hey it looks like he's having fun with it though.

and yes, free soloing does not impress girls.......   bumming !

awesome. and yes dave, free soloing doesn't impress the girls, but then again, neither does whitewater kayaking. maybe a rice burner with the windows down blasting rap music would work...

Pretty amazing, especially that Moonlight footage.

I wish the video wasn't so sensational though. They make it sound like nobody has ever done any significant soloing before, they should at least mention things like Astroman, the Rostrum.

In the "Not The Best, But Not Too Shabby" file, here's one of my free solos from when I lived and guided in Joshua Tree.  Big Mo'.  5.11 ain't world class now, but it wasn't slouch, either, in 1993:

hey  thats  awesome   soloing 5.11 in 93' seems  way high end to me.

and yes  Alex stands on the shoulders of all the great high end soloest that has come before him.

Wondering how they got the shots? Kept looking for a shadow of the photographer/helicopter/ etc.

More water, please.

Let's see... lives with Mom, otherwise lives out of a van, one wrong step and he's dead, yeah, other than those minor issues... hm maybe he'll eventually hook up with another climber.

I'd guess they had somebody rap in from the top of moonlight. I don't think there's a route in the right spot for them to have climbed up alongside.

Other possibility is a BBQ shot from somewhere on the other side of the valley. I don't think helicopters are allowed in the canyon.

I thought it might have been from one of those remote controlled blimps or helicopters. Thats not a joke either, I have seen those used in filming before
