A few of us ran CC Stilly this afternoon and the recent flood has changed a few things. First the good news: The run is free of wood. There is one log at the bottom of the first ledge that really isn't in play and that was it.
Gauge Info:
The DOE gauge showed about 320cfs this afternoon. I am estimating that we had closer to 450cfs. The rock at the entrance to the first ledge had about an inch running over the back side.
The Run:
All of the drops are the same until you get to the bouldar garden. There, some of the rocks in the entrance have rolled down some and distroyed any clean lines into the boulder garden. We portaged today. It will be interesting to see how this rapid develops and looks at different flows.
The lead in to the final ledge has also changed and is slightly more difficult. There are rocks in the main flow now that really try hard to steal your speed going over this ledge.
So keep your eyes open if you are heading in there and be wary of the DOE gauge. ------------- Dave |

As someone that would have preferred 320 cfs today, let me add the following observation.
For whatever reason, the mapping between stage and cfs seems to be drifting over the past 6 weeks on the DOE gauge. Just as an example, on 11/3 @ 11:45 the stage was 6.5 feet - the same as today (12/17) @ 13:45. But, in November, DOE reported 420 at that stage and 320 today. This drift has happened gradually (about 25 cfs every 10 days) for similar flows. Of course, it is possible that they recalibrated but today's run would indicate that they didn't (and I wouldn't question Dave's estimate of 450 as it is in the margin of error). So, you might want to look at the stage directly using this http://www.nwrfc.noaa.gov/river/station/flowplot/flowplot.cgi?CYNW1 - link as it is probably a truer representation of flow than the current DOE mapping. Okay, okay. So the gauge is off and Boulder Garden is a mess. But it was still a damn fine day to be out boating. Many thanks to all for making it safe, fun, and exciting.

| Hey, Dave... Have you checked out the creek since Friday to see how the level is reacting as it drops? i.e. now that the gauge has dropped to 150 cfs... is it really 150 or is it 275 or 200 or? |
