Hey folks:

I need to do some foam work with larger 'chunks' not just the thin sheets of foam. Where can I find that in Seattle?

I have quite a few chunks of foam that you could have. Most are odd shapes and sizes anywhere between 12" x 6" x 6" , I'll take photos and you decide if you want em. I also know that McClendons sells blocks of mini cell but it ain't cheap. JoAnnes fabric also sells sheets of various types of foam. I made a bed out of foam for my van from JoAnnes.

aquasports sells foam. also seattle fabrics in sodo, or any fabric/craft store should have a decent assortment.

Thanks guys- very helpful. I'm traveling at the moment and will be back in Seattle early next week and can look into those suggestions in detail. I need it to build a new 'seat' on top of my existing seat to get up to 2.5 - 3 inches more height with a variable taper over a largish area. The creek-seat on my mamba is too deep- it is like sitting in the bottom oi a well. Plus I need to foam-in the contours and build new contours, that's why I need something thicker than the usual sheets. Much appreciated.

Yo Mokelumne,

Just an fyi for what has worked with us, 2.5-3" is a HUGE change in seat height. The changes to your center of gravity and leverage in the boat are going to shift significantly. You may want to build up in small increments, say 1/2-1/4" at a time. Good luck.

it's not in seattle but try kayakoutfitting.com, eric's prices on minicell are usually pretty good, i know he orders direct from the manufacturer. i just checked out his site and a 4" by 12" by 48" block of minicell is $44, thats a big chunk of foam.

I believe in buying local when you can but it's hard to source big chunks of minicell, and Eric Z. is a paddler and inventor of the Angst squirtboat(fyi).

Moke,

I know you're working on your Mamba seat... and if you want to really change things up, you might consider having a 100% minicell seat made for you. There's a company called Redfish that uses a numeric control router to create a foam seat out of large minicell block. Mainly these are ordered by sea kayakers, but there's no reason it wouldn't work in a WW boat. Just send him a cross sectional diagram of the inner hull of your boat and he'll make the seat. You can make it higher or lower by adding or removing foam. I put one in my old sea kayak and it's quite comfortable. But if your cheeks aren't happy, just pull out a piece of dragonskin and start sanding.

Moke,

Instead of foam to lift your bum you could also try installing Jackson's Sweet Cheeks on top of the existing Mamba Creeker seat. They come in different sizes. Here's a link to the largest size, which would boost you up anywhere from 1/2 inch to 1.5 inches.
