I know I shouldn't celebrate this but...

I think this will allow us to have more runnable days on the Green this spring and fall. Just don't buy a house in the valley!!!!

What they need to do is get rid of the dam altogether and return the area to its original state of natural beauty before the greedy land developers and power hungry politicians built it.

Army Corps of Engineers projects anything below 65 feet being underwater in a strong flood event. From 15th north in Auburn, all the way to Renton. Parts of downtown Kent 10 ft. deep. Possible closure of 167.

Raymond will be underwater.

Better update that disaster plan.

Expect a great spring on the Green as the dam is only safe to 1/3 capacity.

P.S. above data provided at a town meeting in Auburn hosted by the corps of engineers.

I read the article and it still blows me away that people would build in the valley knowing they would flood every year. Dont people have brains? Farm the valley live in the hills...

They're all little dutch boys who like to stick their fingers in dikes.

You know, James mentioned this earlier, the dam was built specifically for flood control. If it was used for the purpose it was built, we would have better kayaking flows and it probably wouldnt have been damaged. But, some years ago some brainiac decided it would be a great idea to supply Seattle with water from the dam and ever since then it has screwed everything up. Greed and power once again hurts our society, when will they learn?

FYI for Green River paddlers.

The following was reported on the WRRR board a couple days ago regarding the 6/9/09 refill meeting.

the word from the refill meeting conference call today is that the corp is going
to continue to raise the reservoir above the maximum high conservation pool
level of 1167'. They are capturing about 400 cfs a day through the end of the
week. They will not let the Auburn gauge go below 900 cfs however. The corp says
that starting Friday afternoon or Saturday morning they will draw the res back
down to 1167' over a 4 day period. The best guess is that flows for this coming
weekend will be in the 900-1400 cfs range.

Looks like good flows this weekend on the Green. Inflow is still over 1000 cfs, so with the added  bump from drawing the res back down it could be real nice.

Damn right.  Dam keepers can be real jerk heads.  I pretty much consider the Green a novelty run because their are no predictable dependable flows on that piece.  The Army Corps guys are the worst.  Big attitudes and a know it all approach to everything up there.  I can think of a few other damns that screw rec uses on rivers within a hundred miles of that one.  NIsqually??

I know we are supposed to be nice to these people but I continually get frustrated by the power trips people and entities get from controlling the flow of a river for whatever purpose they think is necessary.  I refuse to kiss their ass.  Their goal is to keep people off the river kind of like property owners who won't let people portage around a dangerous rapid if it involves being on their land....but...we've already gone there...

Everyone's got their rights....we wouldn't want to infringe on anyones' right to control the river.  Don't you know those guys are saving the salmon!!!??

I disagree franz.

Army engineers are just dudes in a seat trying to keep a job, if they protested and refused to abide by the plan they would just be replaced by someone who would. For the most part flows and a rivers fate are determined by politicians. Mainly by politicians that maintain relationships with larger corporations be it power, water or other utilities. The bottom line is that this is not a simple yell at the guy in the hard hat situation.

We all have a part in the equation and generally our societies complacency is ultimately to blame.
