Earlier this year I decided I would try and paddle Robe every month of 2012. I knew August would be the wild-card month. I waited as long as I could for rain, but it never came. On August 31 I dusted off an old Dagger CFS and hiked in at the Old Robe Trail and put on as soon as I got to the river.
I figured I would be portaging the majority of the rapids and didn't know what to expect in the flats. I was surprised that I only ended up portaging twice. Once at Last Sunshine and again at Off Broadway. Off Broadway would be do-able but risky.
Looks like if we don't get any rain in the next 10 days I might be going for round 2. Any takers?

The level was 3.65' or 70 cfs. At 5' Robe has 700 cfs so this is pretty darn low. Not what I had in mind.

Dunno whats up with the link, but the photos are pretty cool. I never would have thought you could boat it that low. Did you hike out after Mrs. Robinson?

Dan - I hiked out across (RR) from the race finish line. Next time I will be paddling out/dragging out down river. Tunneling through blackberries for an hour was not that fun - either was the hour hike after that.

Sieve at bottom left of landslide is nasty. As expected. There is also a big rock on the right that is undercut/sieve-ish.
Not much current flowing into either at 70 cfs though.

Darren and I had fun day on Robe yesterday. I was actually pretty stoked about what the river was like. It has a whole different character. Makes you appreciate the canyon and the scenery much more than when it is running high.

We identified a couple nasty spots on the river we had not previously known about. Probably the worst was a medium size sieve on center left at the top of Last Sunshine. I would not recommend taking anything but the far left line after getting a close look at that hazard.

The current flow is definitely a little low, if you want the elf flow I'd wait for 100 cfs or so. Still would require either class V mank skills or very good judgement about what to portage.

The definite highlight of the day was discovering that Granite Falls is quite enjoyable at 3.45! Darren even ran it twice. There might be a shelf behind the curtain but overall the drop is quite clean. A sweet ramp into a sloping 15' of freefall. A worthy park-n-huck indeed.

Right on-- way more interesting than the "redifining the idiotic" thread. Ironicly, no lengthy response is required of me here. Sounds fun. Its a cool concept to pledge to run a stretch of water each month throughout the year. Its almost like a pledge of loyalty to a favorite, and always insightful to see a run when its dried up.

I'm with James though: I don't wanna see those photos bad enough to put my Face in that Book. I'd rather go Elf down it myself. I don't currently have a beater boat though.

I'm curious: how were the gravel bars and shoals on the flatwater paddle out?

Slick, this may be an adventure for ya. If ya ever decide to do it, I'd join ya. Maybe I'd even try to borrow an IK for it.

Darren, I like the way you arrange some of your trips. It would be cool if more whitewater boaters broadened their imaginings of what this sport can be.

We hiked in at the old robe trail to where it hits the river (15 min easy downhill walk). So can't speak to how the gravel bars are above there. I got out of my boat once on the paddle out. Ben managed to do the entire thing in his boat. We had extremely low water Sat and still got out in an hour from the race finish line/lime kiln trail to take-out. Most of it is deep pools and the gravel bars that are there are not that bad.

although boating at those flows is not that enticing I could easily make a trip in there just for the fishing, coho are thick in the stilly right now although I don't know what it is like above granite falls. It would be pretty cool to sneak down that run fishing it properly.

Lots of fish James. In fact I had two run ins at two seperate rapids. Nearly got hit by an air-born salmon at 20'er. Ben was right behind and saw the whole thing.
You'd have a lot of fun. Pool below Last Sunshine was full of fish too.
