i forgot to mention that when we went to run the green on Tue, the gate at the paradice lot had been torn down
we talked to some guys from the historical society that happened to be there and they said that somone had tied tow straps on it and yanked it down from the inside
seems that somone who didnt know the combo got locked in there, i know its a pain but that gate should always be closed and locked right behind you , even if you will just be gone for a short time running the shuttle or if you are waiting for people to show up
anyways maby we should try and fix or replace the gate ?
also the wood in paradice ledge is gone

It wouldn't be a bad idea to pool some money together and try to help repair the gate. I talked to the owner a couple weeks back and WKC has been overdue on thier fee to use the lot for a few years. I sent an email to WKC, but never recieved confirmation that they have taken care of the issue. We don't want to lose this access location. And it looks like the owner has reason to have his patience/willingness to start running thin.
I'll put in $20. I can also take care of getting the money to the owner. Who else is in? Any WKC folks want to make sure the dues are paid and see if anyone on that forum wants to contribute.

We were there right after it happened, like minutes after.
Apparently kayakers (unnamed), shut the gate and locked it. Unknowningly, they locked in some people that parked in there and those people with a truck tore the gate down.
Maybe, when there are other people parked in there, we should just close the gate and not lock it.
The steel bars are bent and broken and the whole gate assy needs to be replaced.

I have been there when the historical society people are there keeping the gate open, but not really monitoring it. I find it pretty confusing. Maybe we need to have some kind of discussion with them about what exactly the gate policy should be?

I had a lot to say here but I will save my rant for kayaking with Jp tommorrow.
I will definitely contribute money to keep this access... But I would like to see the money collection well organized.

I just emailed a couple of WKC people about it. I will gladly chip in $20 for the gate, just let us know how you want us to get you the money Darren.

It is also important to make sure the land owner knows that it is general kayakers not just the WKC.
Maybe even AW could get involved? Just sayins that is what they do right?

I'll chip in money.
Although I am a little pissed that WKC hasn't been paying...I got a WKC membership this year for pretty much one reason, that I've used the Green access for 4 years and thought it would be a good thing to contribute to maintaining access.

Nicole LeBlanc from WKC said she will contact the landowner. If anyone needs her email address to coordinate with the PP end of things I will PM it to you.

Somebody get a picture... I'll chip in $20, but have access to free steel and welding/coating...
If someone can get that gate to my work maybe I could just fix it...

To be fixed corectly the gate needs beefed up so it can't be pulled over.
There needs to be holes dug in each post location.
New posts inside a rebar cage poured in
concrete. Then you can build the gate.
After you have a design, with multiple
lock loctations, and its welded together
you can then paint.
It also needs to be agreed to by the owner.

So Nicole talked with the owner and he is aware of the problem and will be assessing what needs to be done over the next few days. She let him know that a number of people, including but not limited to WKC, have offered to help with expenses and labor. He will probably get back to her this coming week with a better idea of it will take to get things taken care of.
As far as the fee for access, WKC does pay yearly and she is working to make sure that they are current. There is also a standing offer from the club to help with
any upkeep of the access area outside of what is done during the annual Green River Cleanup.
OK, that's all I got. Nice to see people offering to pitch in with funds and help - it's such a great access spot to two beautiful sections of river for boaters from II to V, how do you put a price on that? :)

I'd happily throw in $20. Those folks have been generous to maintain access all these years, so whatever it takes: do we need to organize a work party and if so who should spearhead it?
Irene, not sure how much you boat the Green, but could you or someone be the liason between PP n WKC just so we have a full circuit of communication?
How do yall think this is gonna effect me n NVC's boat'n plans tomorrow? (Stoked I got someone to boat and rant with tomorrow!) I agree with NVC that there needs to be a smart plan for pooling the money together, including the total cost required ect.
Man, finally some flow in there and then this happens. Rough season to be trying to run the Green!
indeed

Hey JP, I'm fine being the unofficial liaison, I'm online quite a bit anyway. If I become official though I definitely want a hat, or something. Something diplomatish. Just surprise me. ;)
I think the next steps are to hear what the owner things it will take to get things corrected, and in the meantime to pool funds in an organized manner, and also keep track of people who have offered to help with a work party and/or supplies.
Darren offered to take care of the funds, and since he is all fireman-y and basically the kind of person you'd trust to carry yourself and your pets out of a burning building, I think he would be a good person for the funds collecting. :) As long as he's still up for it, obviously.
Not sure how this will affect your run tomorrow JP, but Nicole didn't mention access being closed off at this point.

$20 from my dog, and labor from me (can we do this on a weekend?).
Someone at the UPS pool session tonight was saying they wanted to donate a significant amount of money, I think I told him to get in touch with James.....

Rather than fix the gate, we should fix relations with the resort owner so we can use the stairs once again.

I agree the stairs would cool, BUT even if we did we should still help fix that gate for all the use and time that the owner has donated and taken to maintain. Not to mention the fact that Stano's bench is there.... no you know what screw that, I will keep taking out at the normal spot, if you need stairs well .... get to stepping, I can handle the scramble.

Wow, bum deal about the gate! As much as I agree that it can be confusing to know when or when not to lock the gate when you see vehicles in there, I've always gone with the thought that whoever was on the property before, probably got there from opening the gate themselves; I've never seen the gate just "hanging open"... It's regrettable that the gate was open for someone to go into the property, but that being said, I also think it was kinda dumb on the driver's part to proceed onto a gated property that has a lock on it... it's unfortunate all around, and I sincerely hope that we don't lose that access!
I'm happy to chip in, as I use and appreciate the access to Paradise. Whatever the property owner wants to do, I'm happy to help.
Thanks Irene, and Darren, for being liasons and jumping on the details/coordination!!

I'm happy to chip in $20 too. There's two things I've always been told to do at the Paradice parking, 1) always close the gate behind you and 2) if anyone tries to come in by vehicle to tell them it's private parking and they need to park outside the gate someplace else. I've had to tell a handfull of people they couldn't park there. Courtney

I have fond memories of the stairs from when i swam and partied there in the 80's and started running the lower in the 90's in kayaks. I guess i just miss that side of the river. It was a cool takeout and put-in. Really pretty over there.

Good point, Courtney. I've had to tell people they couldn't park in there, too, mainly D4, but I don't share that with too many people. Just kidding, I don't tell D4 he has to stay out It is private, and technically if you aren't paid up on your WKC dues no one should be in there. WKC is who has the deal with the land owner. When's the work party? I have a cement mixer.

So Nicole LeBlanc said they stopped by the owner's place last weekend to introduce themselves and make the offer of help/funding in person, she said he may take people up on it. He is apparently not in a big hurry to fix things right now, I guess it is more of an issue for him when the weather gets warmer and more of the general public starts heading that way, but since we don't want things to fall by the wayside she said she will contact him again at the end of the month if she hasn't heard from him before then.
How are we doing on this end? Has there been any coordinated effort to collect funds? If we had a Paypal account set up, how do people in general feel about donating via that, do most people feel OK chipping in via Paypal? It's just a thought, that might be the easiest way rather than expecting people to mail checks, etc.

I'd be more willing to donate in person, but in the end I'll do whatever will right the situation. The key thing for now is to keep this thread near the top of the heap. If it comes down to Paypal so be it. I'm in favor of meeting the owner directly if possible and/or contributing money at the time of a work party if there is one. I'd even blow off such opportunities as running Robe or getting laid (such experiences are nearly synonomous) to show up for this and get it taken care of.
