Way to hang in there Nelson. I thought you had it.

I couldn't really tell how much of the post swim interview I got. :-)

Date Posted: 06 Dec 2011 at 9:46pm
Yeah Nelson! Way to get after it! That was a tough spot to roll the whole way.

For the record, that's "Coal Bucket" rapid, named so in the Bennett Book. Nelson tangled w/ the Coal Bucket- youre core, dude! Core!

It's salt in the wounds to see that I missed this group. P.S. that looked like a crap place to try and get back up in... what is recommended in that situation? Roll toward the rock? I have no idea.

-------------
why not!

Thad, after watching that video and you saying it was salt in your wounds to miss that trip makes me wonder just what kind of sick, twisted individual you are.

You're going to fit right in. :-)

First, avoiding hitting the rock would have been nice.

Second, once flipping, trying to claw your way up the rock side would have been something to do while waiting to wash around it.

After the flip, Nelson did a pretty good job. Stayed focused on his task(trying to roll) and stayed in his boat instead of swimming immediately.

If he had swam immediately upon flipping, he might have gotten much more involved in that rock(is it undercut?) and staying in his boat until he got past the coal bucket kept him from possibly getting sucked under it.

If he coulda held out for just a few more seconds, it would have been my favorite type of video clip. One where there is a decently long struggle with the victory of a roll at the end. Maybe next time. As it is, I'm pretty happy that it wasn't much worse. That could have turned into much more of a struggle.

That area between Coal Bucket and Paradise Ledge is pretty sievy and undercut. Makes me feel like I'm back in the SouthEast.

Again, good work hanging in there Nelson.

We may try to do it all again on Thursday(minus the Coal Bucket episode).

So Nelson is saying Saturday and Slick is sayin Sunday.

I may be in for either day, or both. Not commiting just yet though, but I will let you guys know before meet time. Its going to depend on tempertures and flows, and whether or not anything else is running and who may influence me to go where, ect. But chances are I'll be there for a lower run this weekend.

Trip open to anyone? Also, why isn't the trip planner used? and... I've gone down the lower green once before... in an old wavesport xxx. (I just started boating and it was the first kayak I got.) I'm tempted to try another ancient boat that sports a displacement hull to see if it keeps me right side up more. It's an old perception dancer I also picked up.   :) I know, get a real boat. I picked up a dagger piedra which looked like it would be good to learn in... but that got stolen before I got to any white water.
Anyway, any warnings I should know about trying to run the dancer?

why not!

i want to go.  Unfortunately, I can't commit until Sunday morning.

Maybe i'll bring my pirouette and we can have a retro day, thad... hehe.

which pass do i need to park there?  it's about i time i get a pass.

LoL, I think it's the discovery pass... I got mine at big 5. I don't think a pass is needed at the put in, just the take out. I'm open both days. May go both, but sunday is more probable. I don't get off work until Saturday at 4 am.

Yup. Discover Pass for Flamin G t.o.
They were out in full force checkin 'em last week. I got one.

Yeah, the more the merrier on this kind of run. All are welcome. We don't always use the trip planner. The forum is less formal, but it works. Been awhile since I used the trip planner, but sometimes I like it.

I'm concerned about flows. I doubt I've run the lower this low, but if Slick, Dale, and or James say its good to go, I'll prolly check it out. If its cold though, I'm not sure how many breaks Ima wanna take. May have to leave my van at the T.O. if y'nz wanna stop a whole bunch. Its sposed to be cold. But y'nz do what ya want.

Dancer- I was boating a few years before that boat came out. I could tell ya all about it. It actually became the default "creeker" for awhile, believe it or not, because unless you had a Topolino or a Noah Jedi (maybe mispelling Jedi), the Dancer was one of the most responsive plastic boats on the scene (talkin mid 80's here).

It never really impressed me or my fellow boaters at the time as all that great. Its main appeal was simply that it was made of plastic. Still, if you have one and want to paddle it, I'll tell you this:

Its a helluva lot faster on the water than any playboat or creekboat out there today. And it tracks better, which will help you master your forward stroke better than modern boats with lots of rocker, a virtue indeed..bring it on out!

Just a reminder that you need a Discover Pass to park at Flamin' G. Not sure how militant they are if you just show up for the Shuttle Meet without one. Anyone have experience w/ that? Does the " this car is driving to the put in" line work? Prolly depends on the Ranger.

And it sounds like there is at least one riverside break on the agenda, so come prepared with a snack and maybe a drybag w/ a fist full of kindling- heard somethin bout a fire. If this is the case I'm going to lobby strictly for sunny spots, as there were quite a few from which to choose last week....

See yall at 10, Flamin G (sounds like the name of a gay bar)
-Not that there's anything wrong w/ that

They don't seem to hassle you if you're just running shuttle. They'll wait for you to drive off, then give you the ticket.

/\once again, i made no sense/\..i meant there are usually rangers around but they don't seem to come around while you're there.

I basicly just bought my Disco Pass out in Aberdeen a few weeks ago but hadn't used it or filled it out. 5 min after I showed up at F'n G, El Rangero showed up and came in straight for the Dirtbag Van. I Produced it as he approached, and he personally filled out my liscense plate # on it. He was cool about it n all. I'm just say'n he wasted no time gettin in on it.

I don't have a prob w/ El Passo, I just wish it was traceable to me personally. So if I dicide to ride in the Fish Mobile instead of the Man Van, it's not suddenly some big ol problemo.

Anyway, to clarify for anyone coming in late to this thread, meet times are for Saturday AND Sunday, apparently, despite the thread's title.

I'll be there, would have been today but I was busy buying a new boat! I was hoping I'd get to paddle it tomorrow (after spending all afternoon outfitting) but my test run on Green Lake left my foot numb and I really don't feel like messing with it right now.

Experimental equipment? Sweet.

Will there be explosions?

I'm sure that 500 cfs will be the perfect test bed for whatever madness you have in mind.

I'll be there. 10-11?

I'll bring my blast shield and radiation detector.

I can't figure out which value is lowest: the tempertures, the flow, or my motivation. I'm going to let the cold temps win. Too low for me. Yesterday was fun, but I got really cold by the end.
