One thing that drew me to paddling was all the festivals.  When I started out, I could travel all over the NW from March - September and hit a festival nearly every weekend.  I love the ability for dozens, if not hundreds of paddling folks getting together to enjoy the river.  The only down side was, they never seem to be at peak paddling time for our reagion and seem to taylor to the Semi-Pro and up crowd.

So, here is my proposal:  A Festival when rivers are at its best, but the weather might not be. I would say Mid March to Mid April, within that time frame (I do not want to overlap any others in the reagion, like the PP Ball, seeing fests are far and few between these days).  I am also thinking of a river that is cetrally located to the majority of Washingtons boaters, Such as The Cispus (with its New Take out and nearby camping) to draw every ability level.

Now, if you have ideas, would like to help, have connections to folks at the Tac Power for the takeout and/ or getting the Iron Creek Campground Open, etc.  let me know.

What is the first step? Setting a date?

nice idea.  you might consider picking a date, and all, but avoid picking the locale.  flows being equal, pick for the weather!

Just to let you know, I am not planning on having any formal competitions, events, or what have you's.  I am however, calling in a few favors from a bunch of folks in the industry to have just about every Kayak Manufacturer on hand with Demos, so you can demo nearly every boat on the market in one place!

There will be a raffle to benefit whomever I decide, I'm thinking of a local non-profit that exposes lots of paddlers to the sport.  So if you know any, let me know.

For the Cispus River near Randle, WA, it seems that in late April, the Temp Ranges from Mid 40's at night to Mid 60's during the day.  Rainfall is tapering off and snow is normaly not an issue, making the flow between 1300-1550cfs, which is amazing for the Lower Cispus.

I am thinking the date of April 24-26

Woooeee hold on.

The perfect place for an event like this to take place would be on the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmi. Not only is there a great river and Possible camping in the area, but there are many creeks and rivers nearby for other possible adventures and competitions. Within a 30 minute drive there is class V+ to class II water, and this is very centrally located right next to I-90.

With the Cispis you are limited to only the Cispis and allot of driving if you want to go anywhere or need to buy any supplies. (our beer drinking friends may need close access to stores which are ample in the Snoqualmi drainage)

Just my 2 cents worth....

Plus there has been competitions held on the MM before and I am sure that there are people we know who live along the river that may be into something like this and will help out.

Hmmmm.... I see......... I am trying to find a central spot that our southern friends would come to.......... plus I think the Snoqualmie thing has been done and is beat to death weekly....... In that case, lets just do another one on the wenatchee............ Lets try a new river, new area, new scenery, that is not a daily back yard run, and see how it goes, shall we?    Again, the pros have dozens of options for 'competition', so lets try and draw people to something new, a friendly river, with a few nearby options for others, but an event that newbies can feel comfortable coming to................

I agree, I have never done the Cispus, but have wanted to. An event like this would certainly get me out there. As for camping, I like to feel like I'm away from everything.

Dave, get off the MM, there are other runs out there!

The Cispis is certainly away from everything. I just havnt done it much since they built the Dam and ruined the lower run. But, I would really like to do the upper section as I have never run it yet.

If someone figures out the date and can do some of the initial planning I can get the gate opened and coordinate as appropriately with Lewis County PUD (not Tacoma). WKC and PaddleTrails have done some big trips down there followed by food and drinks at the Big Bottom. WRRR has talked about a festival of some sort. If someone wants to take charge just drop me an email and I can assist with logistics and put you in touch with others who have talked about this.
