   Topic: good Ben Howard level? gauge?

What's a good level for the BH wave? I haven't been there in several years and I've heard different things. With falling temps and levels it might be decent.

It changes every time the sky goes over 20-25k. That gravel bar above the wave gets shifted around and the water levels change a bit but the feature is created from rock, so although the levels change the wave is usually not destroyed like the one in Gold Bar (RIP)
Let us know what it's lookin like if you hit it. My guess from the past is 1700-2500.

a rock directly upstream of b ho rolled toward the wave and may have screwed things up. i'm excited to see if she'll come in this year. i think james is about right with those levels (sky+sultan). if you go check it out let me know, i'm keeping an eye on it too.

I'd actually like to head out to the Ben Howard and check it out for another reason...
Perhaps James has a Clue...
(The kind Lady who runs the 'lil BBQ joint in Sultan Beta'd up and was talking about a place they call "The Toilet Bowl". We assumed she may have been refering to BH wave.)
It may be a new wave, and maybe that's bad news for bobbers and poppers, but my New Wave just may like that spot. I don't know. Never been there. Guess I'll have to check it out.

actually your right JP that section has two distinct channels that converge along with a deep pool and a drop in gradient.... Hmmm, I am now curious!!!!

Um, I vaguely remember checking it out when the Sky was - I think - 1800 or so, plus about 300-400 from the Sultan, and there was nothing there. We thought it looked like it needed more water. I suggest taking a look-see when the combined level is closer to 3000.

you go out these yesterday, sandstrom?i paddled the Sky with Rob and there was at least 2" of ice on everything. None of it broke off the rocks I was Splatting. Shiney undercut banks the whole way. Careful in those tight chutes right now...

This sounds like something that needs to be investigated.
Where is this Ben Howard wave? The squirt spot may very well be there at levels other than when the wave is good.
Count me in on an exploratory mission.

Will do Dale. I myself have never been to the Ben Howard wave (or as a Sultan local called it "The Toilet Bowl"- sounds enticing ).
I imagine James and I will head over there eventually. We'll keep you posted.

i went to bh last late winter early spring, it was fun. after the big water event early in the season i checked it out at every level from 4000 cfs down this summer, early fall while the sky was dropping, I never saw anything worth (BH wave proper, the upper hole might be something to dip ends in)surfing after the rock moved that Kurle noted.
As for a squirt spot i have my doubts. The two converging channels are slightly downstream of the BH wave, and due to the braided nature of the river right channel the convergence lacks any type of visible strong seam or whirlpool 'squeeze'. Looking at the rock feature that makes the pourover wave it seems to be shallow for sinking and lacking in the laminar flows required for a good down elevator.
With all that said, somebody please prove me wrong. BH wave was a fun spot, it may come back.
