Topic: Middle Middle Don't Follow Me Discussion Thread Posted: 30 Mar 2007 at 12:55pm |
This is the Middle Middle Don't Follow Me discussion thread. Please post any questions below. Remember the actual Trip Details are located on the Middle Middle Don't Follow Me | Trip Page Well, the title says it all. The MM should be at a friendly level on Saturday - probably 1100-1200cfs, and the weather is expected to clear about noon though temps will only be in the high 40s.
I say "don't follow me" because I really don't know the way down this river having only been on it 3 times. But, I'm sure others who show up will know it better than I or it will be a bit of an adventure.
Assuming, good flows, good weather and everyone is feeling good, we will likely do a second lap, probably be back at the take-out around 1:30 PM (of course, subject to swimmers).
Oh, and Deborah will be bringing some cookies

You know, I was thinking, the upper Green river Gorge is running right now at 1500cfs but stairstepping down. For you guys at your skill level, 1500-1300cfs would be a good non pushey level to go down for your first time. You should seriusly consider it if it does not fall below 1300cfs. I have done this section probably around 150 times at varius levels up to 4500cfs and have swam in several rapids including Pipeline at 3000cfs. Let me tell you the swims on the upper are not to bad, I have had way worse swims on the lower Green!
So if the Green stays good lets discuss it, if not lets go for the Middle.

P.S. there are only actually 3 rapids that pose a challenge on the Green; Pipeline, Mercury, and the Nozzle, in that order.

Dave, Thanks for the vote of confidence but I don't think we are quite ready for the Gorge. I think it is probably our next "step up" but, for now, we need more skills...You know, like nunchuck skills, bowhunting skills, computer hacking skills, oh, and, importantly, kayaking skills. But, when we are feeling more confident, we'd love to go on a run down there with you. arn

hAVE YOU GUYS DONE THE LOWER YET? OOpps caps lock. Not that I want to do the lower, the Middle is way more fun, but the lower will help you understand the upper and how the river personality is.

We haven't but folks have told us that it isn't as much fun as other rivers around (MM, Sky, etc.). But, we'll do it sometime soon - I'd rather do the MM while that is going (even at 1100) and save the Lower Green for a time when that is the only choice.
It is very helpful to understand your thoughts that 1300-1500 is a good level for the Upper for a first descent. What do you think is a good level for the Lower??

Hey Dave
Thats bullshit. If you swim at 3000 to 5000 your swim may be short but could be very brutal.
Arn and Deb aren't ready although I'm sure they can survive.

I think they are ready but I don't think that a swim in the upper gorge should be taken lightly.
Look at the geology in there ... nasty sieve and undercut walls at different levels. Certainly a step up from the middle middle in difficulty and danger.

I'm glad mountain biking season is starting soon Yeah, the falls hurt more, for sure, but 15 years of mountain biking skills feel much more comfortable than 10 months of kayaking skills. And, I usually don't hear the words, "nasty", "sieve", "undercut" and "danger" in the same sentence. Though I did have a friend that drove his femur through his hip joint in a nasty, dangerous fall. On second thought, glad there are still a few months of kayaking left.

OK, Ok, like I said before, the Green river has a personality, so you need to get to know it. The best way to get to know it is to run the lower section a few times at different levels. It is a great river, probab;y one of the best around thats close. Then step up and run the top, but the upper is nothing to be frightened of, it's not like the Last Nasty on the Sultan or something worse.

Yes, Dave. We are getting ready to leave for the put-in in 5 minutes. What's up? Level has come up to 1270 - maybe we'll get mid 1300s if we are lucky
