Might be getting out for a leisurely float with some folks in the next couple of weeks and was considering the lower section of the Cedar. However, does anyone know if this log jam is still an issue: http://www.kingcounty.gov/recreation/boating/rivers/landslide_hazard.aspx

(I think this is the area in question: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Maplewood+Golf+Course,+Renton,+WA&hl=en&ll=47.469622,-122.148142&spn=0.001293,0.00257&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=49.223579,84.199219&oq=maplewood+golf+course&t=h&hq=Maplewood+Golf+Course,+Renton,+WA&z=19 )

The info is from 2001, so I wasnt sure if it was still valid. Anybody ran the lower portion of the Cedar since 2001 and have anything new to report?

(Note: there was another, different log jam that occurred in 2011 that has since been removed, but I believe it was in a different spot)

Yes, the logjams are still there in that location. The whole area is unstable as the 2001 Nisqually earthquake sent down a landslide that diverted the river to a new channel through the woods.

For those with the skills (class 3 river reading and manuevering skills) the logs don't pose much of a problem. Last time we went through there they were obvious where you had to portage or make a move to miss/duck a log... but still not a section of river that I want newbie paddlers on.

We ran this yesterday to scout it out. Lots of wood all over the place, but all of it easy to avoid if you are in your boat and on your line. We ran from the slalom course/watershed gate all the way to Lake Washington and didnt have to portage anything. Even the big log jam had a clear line through it, but it is definitely not somewhere you would want a swimmer or somebody who couldnt control their boat - lots of potential for something bad to happen.

The only other hazard is a cable spanning part of the river (described here: http://www.kingcounty.gov/recreation/boating/rivers/cedar-river-cable-hazard-notice-2012.aspx). At lower water, it is clearly visible and easy to avoid on the left, but at higher water, it could be hard to see.
