Paddler Magazine is hosting Slough Slog II March 8 at Wilmot-Gateway Park in Woodinville. This is an informal race between all types of paddlers. It is designed through a staggered start to give each boat category—creekboats, whitewater shortboats, wildwater boats, sea kayaks and surf skis—an opportunity to cross the finish line first.
In Slough Slog I, the wildwater boaters—led by Tom Wier—took four out of the top five spots.
But the remaining 23 finishers were a fairly proportionate mix of creekboaters, sea kayakers and whitewater longboats.
The 2.5-mile course forces paddlers to race downstream for 1.25 miles, turn around and race back upstream. The crux of the course is near the finish line, where paddlers must work through fast current to attain slower moving current and finish the course.
Wildwater, sea and long whitewater kayaks should be able to attain the eddy regardless of the water level—the higher the water, the easier the attainment—but creekboaters will almost certainly be forced to “monkeyboat” themselves through a shallow gravel bar to finish the course.
The staggers for the race will be announced on race day.
Slough Slog II is scheduled for March 8 to help prepare competitors the Sound Rowers’ Lake Sammamish Race on March 14 and the Cedar River races on April 4.
