I've never done the Puyallup, but this would be a great year to get into it. I've heard mixed things about access and ratings and things. It all seems a little fuzzy. I'd like to see what's going on in there. What do you all know. Who wants to go. Access is $325. No joke. Wha'diya say?

Let me know when you have paid the $325.00

Then I'd be interested, I have heard it is manky other than that.

Who collects this money?  How could access to a river possibly cost that much?

I think it is Campbell's Property.

Forestry Company. People dump trash, abuse the land, so it gets locked and gated. Keys cost money to track etc... so thats their deal.

Ask Mike Hoover for more details, he works for a timber company like this and has a good perspective from both sides.

Here is a link to some more recent beta on this stretch

About a year back I went around with Campbell because I was trying to get access for this run.

Good work. I noticed the gauge for that stretch. How did you come up with it, James? I understand it's a little difficult to estimate the flow. I think it would be great to get in there this year. I've never done an over night, but maybe this would be worth while.

River:  If you’re willing to deal with access issues, the Puyallup Canyon is a fantastic run, with a stunning “gated” entrance into a spectacular canyon with some healthy whitewater.  Whaley’s description in Bennett’s book is certainly dated – we never found the big “run right river-wide ledge” a few drops into the canyon.  On the other hand, we encountered a recent huge slide partway through the canyon that forced a few moments of concern and some creative portaging.

Access:  After a discussion or two with the "gate keepers", we took advantage of a "first decent opportunity" on the SF Puyallup and approached via the west side road in Mt. Rainier NP.  This made for a unique wilderness experience, but the highlight is really the lower canyon.

Guage:  Don’t forget that when the Electron powerhouse is on-line, they’re diverting water prior to the canyon and dumping it back into the river after the canyon but prior to the guage.  Hence, the reading at Electron is about 400cfs more than what you’ll experience in the canyon when they’re diverting.  We had a guage reading of 800 – 900cfs at Electron with the powerhouse on-line.    This seamed about right for a first time run.  And the best part…   This was July 31 & August 1!  Nothing like great whitewater in a deep canyon durning the heat of summer.

Thanks for the beta Jon, I added some of that to the rivers page. You can always yank it down or edit it if you would like.
