 Topic: Robe - July 25th or 30th - Low Water Posted: 11 Jul 2013 at 9:39pm |
I'm going to head into Robe for a low water trip the morning of July 25th or 30th. I can go which ever day there is more interest - if there's any interest at all. It's pretty neat to see the river bed with not much water. We got down it last year with 1 portage at 70 cfs (3.5'). Not too sure what 350 cfs going to look like. I'm planning on a beater boat and plenty of portaging.

scratch the 25th. i'm planning on the 30th....should be nice and low :) looks like about 150 cfs gonna be in there. last year we had 50 and 75. so not real sure if 150 will make it better or worse. going to bring a spare boat...

you'd be doing a fair bit of portaging with the ik. it'd be a lot of work, but if you were expecting a workout it wouldn't be that bad. on the plus side, the canyon is actually more beautiful with low water than filled in. you can see the bedrock that once made up the canyon before being blasted for the railroad.

I'm intrigued, for sure, D. But, alas, I don't have a beater boat. And I don't think I want to turn the one I do have into a beater boat.

Darren, I'm interested in an ELF adventure tomorrow, this is a great excuse to dust off the IK.
Brian, you should come out if your schedule allows, would be great to paddle with you!

It will definately qualify as ELF. Looks like it just dropped below 100 cfs and will be at all time record lows today and tomorrow. Sweet!

went good. it is incredibly fun and beautiful in there. not sure if it's because the expectations are so low - but i've done it 3 times below 4' now and like it more each time.
i did portage 4 times this year however. last year it was 1 and 2. the uber low water lines at t1 and garbage have filled in with boulders. the other portages were last sunshine (there is a line) and off broadway - which is also runnable.
i did have an interesting thought while i was in there: Ben Hawthorne, to my knowledge, has the highest water decent (with SamG) and lowest water decent (with me) on Robe. Pretty cool...

oh, and i did bring the gobro. lots of footage, but still no editing here. have to come and visit to see it...
granite falls would be a worthy park and huck for a class 4/5 paddler.
IK would be ok - but i would bet the portage number doubles or triples - however still worth it. some of those would be real easy. and you want to get up and look around anyways.
if you're not running robe at 5.25' already - this wouldn't be the time to scope it out. although some of it's easy, there are several spots with bad pin potential. if you planned 8 hours and 15-20 portages go for it.
