This weekend the gate at Paradise was locked so you couldnt unlock it with the usual combo lock. This is the second time the gate was locked. The first time, we were all locked in and had to use bolt cutters to get out. I now carry bolt cutters in the truck... anyway, does anyone know what is going on there? Are kayakers no longer welcome at Paradise?
There is parking on the roadway west of all the no parking signs, so it is not a really big deal, but the parking lot sure is nice to use.

Non-paddler people just dont seem to realize or comprehend that people kayak the rivers around here this time of year. It is actually a really big suprise to most people. I wonder what it would be like to live life with your head burried in the sand all the time...

you kayak in this weather ?  isnt it cold ?   there is a river down there ?  wow you are crazy

its true most people in this state think that if you are out on a river you are a danger to yourself and the environment

stop kayaking and get to the MALL  or in front of the TV  where you belong !!

The park lot is private property.  I am a bit concerned if you damage locks or chain they might put up the no trespassing sign and access would be lost

Correction, I did not cut the lock the day we were locked in. One of the local homeowners came down and cut a link out of the chain for us and he did not know who locked it like that.

Also, there are already multiple no trespassing signs and no parking signs all over the place there.

Anyone contact the Carters (property owners) to see what's up?  That would seem to be the  logical next step.  Or were they the ones that cut the link?  The WKC does pay an annual fee to the Carters to keep access open for boaters.  Maybe they neglected to send in the payment for this season, and this is just a reminder...

Dave

This access has been paid for by the WKC for
the last Thirty Plus years.
This is not access for the public.
If your not a member of the WKC, then you
are the public. Join the WKC,
and volunteer to help with access.
The current lock was purchased by Doug Knapp
when we showed up to see a cut lock,
and an angry owner who was ready to deny all
access. I was corrected Renee bought the last
lock, while Doug bought the previous lock.

Hey Bill, can you give a rundown on what the current situation is then?  Is there a new lock with a new code that is supposed to be used just by WKC people?

I think this might be a slight thread drift, but seems semi-relavent.  I have contributed to AW because of the good things they do like keeping access open.  But does WKC also do the same thing?  I hadn't been a member of WKC in a while mainly because I don't do any club activities and such - but would re-think that in light of the post above about its activities regarding Paradise access.  I am all for diverting some of my annual beer fund to groups advocating kayakers interests.

The lock situation was sorted out by the time we finished the run on Saturday.

Same locks, just in correct linkage.

Hi Irene

I know nothing about the current situation.
There has never been a policy excluding anyone.
I was just making a point.
The gate has been damaged, the locks have been cut from
time to time. The carters may be angry about
something we know nothing about.
I will make some calls to determine the problem.

Irene

I had Renee go take a look at the lock.
It has now been changed, same combo.
I am waiting for a call back from the Carters.

WKC is currently paid up with the Carters. Re: ScottH, besides paying for the Green access, WKC allocates conservation money for both whitewater and saltwater resources. Some of that goes to AW, some goes to other projects.

To further Ben's point, access and conservation is part of the WKC mission. WKC spends approximately 5% of its annual budget on Access and Conservation. A portion of this money goes to the sea kayaking world. The vast majority of remaining WKC funds are spent on providing paddling opportunities to the community, including pool session, trip, training, and clinics. WKC is the vehicle many people use to help first learn to kay. The club hasn't been very conspicuous lately, but it still provides vast support to our state's kayaking community. Visit the new website to see all that's going on, join the club, and participate. That is, if you're the social type.
