Topic: Lower Owyhee Take Out Posted: 09 Apr 2012 at 6:29am
I am thinking of switching my April Hells Canyon trip to the lower Owyhee. I have been reading about the condition of the road out at Birch Creek. I need to use a trailer for this trip. It is 8'x4' with 12" tires (I have a few spares). Will I be able to get it down to the river and back again?
I've thought the road is much improved over the guidebook reports and such. In dry conditions with a good solid trailer, I think it would be fine. I think the clearance of the pulling vehicle might be more of a limiting factor. It's really on the first uphill part that is an issue. Once you are at the top it should be no problem.
I figured with the time frame the 15 mile lake paddle would be a bit much. With very few people going on the trip I thought the added expense of the tow would be a deal breaker to. Otherwise I would be all about the hot springs!
We ran it last June and don't remember the road being that bad. I think you should be able to get your trailer down there based on the conditions we saw. The trick will be driving the road if it rains. It's clay that turns to snot when wet.
