Just a heads up that the Cedar River races are this weekend, March 17 and 18, 2012.  The downriver races are on Saturday and the slalom course is open for practice all day that day too, then the slalom races are on Sunday.  I'm pretty sure it costs something but I don't think it's debilitating.

Here's the link to more info on the NW Whitewater Racers site:  http://www.nwwhitewater.org/

It's all fun and games until someone loses a paddle.

So far planning on it, barring an REM (Real Estate M-ergency). :)  Hope you make it out there, give a shout if you think you will.

Maybe sunday. But regardless, the event deserves a bump. PPeeps who've never been to a whitewater slalom race should go check this out. This is truly a cornerstone of our sport without which paddlers would have never been able to cultivate the skill they passed down to anyone who ever taught any of us how to do anything in a kayak.

(You wanna talk ROOTS? These are the roots- and the fundementals of slalom skills are still valid ways to develope technique without getting into gnarly situations so that when you do you actually got some poise and control).

So Bump.

Bump again. :)  I was out there today and talked with Jennie Goldberg, she says please come one come all to race tomorrow, creekboats, playboats, maybe you could even convince them to do an inflatable killer whale category.

Regardless, plastic boats do have their own class and right now it's possible no one is in it, I like a lame-o made a work appointment for right when I think it is and I think it's too late to change it.  It's also a great opportunity to watch people with great skills out on the water.  "Hard moves on easy whitewater" is what someone said recently on this forum, this is exactly it.  Anyway, Jennie said part of what keeps these races happening is people participating, hint hint... ;)  So if you can, please join in on the slalom event, all are welcome and they'd love to see more 'regular' paddlers out there.

Funny how no one ever touches this thread each year when this event rolls around. Another thing too, is if you are a reasonably competent boater its likely you could borrow a slalom boat to use if you shmooz just a tiny bit, come out of your shell and be friendly.

People like to emphasise that a slalom boat isn't necessary, and its not, but they are cool to paddle, and well suited for running gates.

Yeah, creekers: try to imagine how it relates to the skills you are (hopefully) trying to develope: its nice to drop into an unfamiliar gorge with extra tricks up your sleeve. That's where slalom comes in.
