I became suspicous that the PP "gauges" were not accurate when the river levels hadn't changed in a couple days after the big rain that came in yesterday

USGS Waterwatch. Sometimes has projected flows, for certain gauges.

The far right side of the listed gauges on the front page will tell you when it was last updated. It is a good habit to check this. But beyond that, when its raining like this i would want to avail myself of the specific gauge page and see what the chart looked like -ex. is it spiking sharply?

Not Clever enough to check AW, huh?
Ha! That was totally a cheap shot. Sorry.
Anyway, I noticed it too. Should have said something Friday night when I suspected it.

So if you must blame someone, blame me.
Not PP, I PPlead.

This sight, while a fantastic and astronomicly good resource, is complex, yet maintained by a single individual.
Surprising that none of the other members noticed this and at least notified the less clever of us. But then again I noticed it and said nothin.

There are other resources than PP for flows. Noaa, as mentioned, AW is very similar to PP the way it lists runs and flows, and there is also the simple and elegant text service. Text "Level Robe" to 41411 and in a few seconds you'll recieve a text with the flow. The service recognises most of the nick names paddlers utilize when refering to runs around here: Sky, Robe, ect.

The intrepid PNW boater is gonna smell rain and get him or herself out on it, independently of technological crutches. Utilize multiple sources for your beta. Hopefully you can get out Sunday. Probably the better day as far as water goes anyway.

It appears that it's not just the PP pages. Some of the USGS pages(the source for most AW & PP gauge reports) are also not updating properly, which may well explain the problem with PP.

It's a good idea to look at the time stamp on whichever gauge you're using. If it's not updating, that is often an indication of rapidly changing conditions(shooting up), ice or a computer glitch.

James posted on here last week letting us know that the gauges would not be updating for a few days while he installed some better anti-spam features on the site, and he's away on some trip this weekend - I think that's what's going on.

He should have labeled the thread "Playboating carnage on Icicle" and more people would have read it. :)
It's all fun and games until someone loses a paddle.

Ha! Thats funny! Or how bout a thread titled
"New world record highest waterfall decent: 256 feet!!!"

I think Irene's explaination makes the most sense because AW and PP haven't reflected the same data, and PP's guages haven't changed throughout the weekend while AW's has. Good thing we have both, because sometimes PP updates quicker and more frequently than AW

One thing's for sure, PP didn't ruin my weekend. In fact, despite the glitches that once in a great while aflict a website, I gotta hand out some PPraise to the nutty PP:

My buddy wanted to boat some class III and kept pinging me. Squeaky wheel gets the grease, and with class III, usually the more the merrier.
At the last minute I was able to reconnect with old aquaintences and meet new PPeeps alike. Thanks to the forum and PM.
A group of us threw ourselves together and ran the Tilton. Perfect medium flow to satisfy our diverse interests.

Gotta say that the Tilton has to be one of my very favorite class III runs in WA (with some IV-ish spots). Accessible, yet intimately remote. Straight forward yet substantial whitewater.

Seriously- those of you who can appreciate a good quality, classic and beautiful whitewater run- if ya haven't run the Tilton, you should.

Irene is indeed correct. We had some massive DOS attacks last week and some problems with a script I run for checking accounts with stopforumspam.com. All of it had to be re-done due to some new exploits and the gauges had to be taken down in the meantime. I posted it but looks like the announcement got buried.

Gauges will be back up today or tomorrow. I was out on the OP so I am just getting around to it. Yes it rained out there, yes the rivers came up big time, no I was not sad.

That would have been a great time to fix "FORCAST" to its correct spelling (I sent you a PM in hopes you would fix it before posting publicly). Just hurts my eyeballz....
More water, please.
