You better get up pretty early then. I see the logging crews going up the other side of the hill every morning around 3:30AM!
If you go I would appreciate it if you could do a trip report. It would be good know what is up there in case we get a SAR call on the creek. Plus I am trying to convince our Swiftwater Rescue Team that they need to train to be proficient in water of greater difficulty than class II. They don't believe me that people paddle the creeks that feed the Skagit.

Here's what Chris & I did...
Drove through the open gate, dropped gear where we planned on hiking down to the river.
Drove back down, and parked our car outside the gate.
Walked back to gear (easy).
The rest, you should be able to figure out.

Hey Kyle, if your boss doesn't believe you, send them a few links from here or AW. Or tell them to google the creek in question along with the word kayak.  Most of the beta I have is on the http://professorpaddle.com/rivers/riverdetails.asp?riverid=415 Deer Creek page. I also have some pics on my blog, workin on a video. It's big water class V in that canyon. More water than Robe and pretty nonstop. The good thing for rescue scenarios is that it needs to be raining pretty good for this run to come in. If everything else is big so is Deer Creek. That said, it is a good sized canyon and it looked to be more walkable than Robe. Wouldn't wanna swim it.

My boss is actually very supportive of getting the SRT out in the places they are likely to be needed. The issue is that SRT is a volunteer search and rescue group, and it is hard to explain to them that because they are prepared to handle the class III problems from the class does not mean they can deal with situations in class V water. Since they are not boaters most of them do not know what class V looks like, and because they are volunteers we cannot order them to do anything. Combine this with relatively few calls in the last few years and it is easy to become complacent.
Really just proof that I am not talking out of my ass, and people really run these creeks helps a lot.

Hey Kyle, here is a video with just a quick sprinkling of what deer creek has to offer. keep in mind, things are much more burlz in person, when you can actually feel the rapid and take in all of your surroundings...
