I'm a total newbie looking for instruction on flat water so that I can safely and sanely get out on some whitewater.  I'm 49, very fit, generally coordinated, motivated and have the time to practice, so I think I'll be a fast learner.  I'm also a strong swimmer and comfortable in the water.  I'd like to get a number of sessions developing basic skills on flat water and then go out on some rivers.  I have access to some gear (paddle, helmet, life jacket).  Please have experience doing basic instruction.

In exchage I am offering a series of therapeutic deep tissue massages.  I'm an LMP (Licenced Massage Practioner) and can provide excellent references.  If you don't want to use all the sessions yourself, you can also get gift certificates.  My studio is in Wallingford/Fremont.  It would be ideal for me to do the flat water instruction on Greenlake or Lake Union.

Does anyone have any suggestions about other ways I might get more into whitewater besides this?

Please send me a message through the website or contact me directly at elro11@yahoo.com   The weather is gorgeous - let's get started!

I am sure someone here will be willing to teach you for free. If not let me know the next time you are in Bellingham and I'll help you out.

Ellie,

First I say lets ditch the styrofoam and work on minicell. Don't get me wrong there are tons of ways to outfit a boat but minicell has to be the best and nastiest stuff around!!!! If there were little paper doo dads I would jump on that, but being water soluble begs the question does it belong in a whitewater kayak?

Onto the topic: Rolling.

I taught a friend how to roll last week and were meeting on lake washington tomorrow. The easiest way to get moving on your instruction is going to be by being proactive. No one is going to hunt you down to teach you, perhaps with the lure of the massage . So good on it for making the first move!!!! Were meeting at the south end of lake washington at a park called Gene Coulon tomorrow in the evening. I should be careful what I say since he might read this, but he pretty much got is roll dialed in on day 1 and he will be off getting it bomb proofed without the need for much attention. Depending on where your at I would be more than happy to give you a block of instruction, no massage required although it does sound nice! And I do have some whiplash...

As for rivers, I would like to follow up on any instruction with a few trips down the rio but honestly it's key to meet up with other boaters that are at the same level as you for making runs on rivers. Trust me you will find plenty as you start heading to putins and take outs.

So shoot me a PM or give me a call if your interested in meeting tomorrow. If not good luck on your hunt for instruction. I am sure with a little determination you will find someone to work with!!!!
