Anybody know much about the NF John day? looks like it may be a little high for the upper run via my  little raft full of friends and camping gear. How's the Dale to Monument stretch? any must-see side hikes? wanna join us?
Also curious obout other easy to moderate multiday runs in the area- I've got a raft, a wife who loves river camping, and a whole summer to play!

Chris,

Dale to Monument has a road through most of the canyon, if I recall correctly.  Mostly just swiftwater, no whitewater to speak of.  The upper run, as I understand it, is preferrable, but access this early is likely not available, and there's one serious drop.  There's a ranger station in Granite, I think, that can give road beta.

Either Service Creek to Clarno or Clarno to Cottonwood sections of the main John Day are excellent trips Combine them for a great week long float.  There can be some flats and wind, but the camps are excellent, there are a handful of defined rapids (II's, plus Clarno which can be real when the water is high) and the hiking is easy.

In my opinion, though, none of these is as good a trip as the Grande Ronde.  For a weekend, I'd recommend the Minam to Powwatka stretch, which has some of the best camping around.  Check the weather, it can be 70 or snowing this time of year.

Thanks for the beta- Grande Ronde was great- cold and rainy as hell, but super fun nonetheless. Upper North John Day is indeed inaccessible now, but the roadside Camus Creek provides about three miles of really fun continuous IV minus at this level- one nasty tree in there, but you can see it from the road and run right over the top of it in the middle. Other than Camus, it's amazing how the geology of the Blues turns so much water and gradient into such disappointing whitewater. Looking forward to getting on some multiday runs in the Cascades- I've done a bunch of kayaking over there, but have yet to explore anything I'd be willing to raft. The Klickitat from the indian reservation sounds interesting- know anything about that one? Thanks again for the tip on the Grande Ronde!

Chris,

Glad you enjoyed the trip -- too bad the weather wasn't a bit better for you.  Agree with ya re the nature of the whitewater -- try the Imnaha canyon or Joseph Creek for a bit more action.  I think the Imnaha has been cat boated, so it might be raftable too.

Might be a window on Joseph here in the next week or so, if anyone's looking.

Both sound interesting, especially Imnaha, from what little information i could find on them. The landowner issues on Joseph seem a little intimidating, but may be overstated. Drop me a line if you wan tot check these runs out- I'm off from next Thursday through thursday- would like to do a mix of class V kayaking and some easy exploratory runs- maybe even take advantage of the long days to run a classic multiday as a dawn-to-dusk push or an ultralight overnighter. Do you know what the permit/access situation is on the Middle Fork Salmon? I've heard you can sometimes get on it in late May without having to win the lottery.

The landowner issue on JC isn't too horrible.  The beta on AW is reliable, and you either want to put in carefully using the public access and a low profile, or contact the landowner and be polite.  We've built a pretty good relationship there. The run is worth the access hassles.

Was on the Jarbidge Bruneau one year on a 4 day run at 500cfs.  Two dudes dropped all 70 miles in wildwater boats in a day.  Impressive.  Less work than the 37 miles from China Bar to Heller bar on the Lower Main Salmon in a day though lol

Early season MFS: It can be done, and is often done.  Hit up the idahowhitewater group on yahoogroups.  You can snowmobile in and launch at boundary, or you can tackle the upper section by launching on Marsh Creek.  It's usually cold, fast, and high.  Haven't done it, but did a preseason Selway that was an excellent trip.

Illinois is an obvious candidate for a good ww trip to bomb in a day.

Right on- seems like when people act responsibly, those sorts of issues work out well. Lemme know if you want to do that one soon. I'm off the next seven days- headed to Leavenworth for the weekend, May stay through Wednesday or so, run Icicle and such. Sounds like a great area.
I talked to some of my Idaho boater buds, and they said if you're not scouting or portaging, and the water's high, you can easily do sixty or eighty miles with lunch and a nap in the middle. Fired up to take advantage of the long days and see some big rivers!Never heard of the Illinois (except way down in the flats) What's that one all about ?
Just picked up a Middle Fork Salmon permit for May 28th-  Prob'ly put in on Marsh Creek, spend five or so days in there. I've heard it's awesome. There's a trip coming out today, they said they'd call with the wood report on Marsh. Leland will provide campsite/hike/hotspring beta from his three trips. Wanna go?

Wow, that's an amazing offer, thanks Chris.  I'd love to make it, but I think I've been out of the office a bit much the last couple of weeks to pull that off.  Never managed to make it down the MFS -- I'll look forward to hearing about your trip.

The Illinois is in Southern Oregon.  It's a somewhat short trip, ~40 miles.  It's a tributary of the Rogue, which is a III multiday staple which was made class III by dynamiting all the rapids 60 years ago with the FS' blessing.  The Illinois traverses a roadless wilderness of amazing biodiversity,  and hasn't been dynamited to hell.  Tons of IV rapids, and with water it's a IV-V raft trip.  At lower flows it's still a solid IV run with a couple of tougher spots.  We're right at the end of it's normal season now.  One of my favorite whitewater trips anywhere.

Enjoy the MF -- I assume you're going in on Marsh Creek?  There's several spots with wood right now.  the Idahowhitewater yahoo list has the most up to date info on Marsh Creek wood, often updated via sat phone calls from trips still on the water.

man I wish I could join.  have a great trip!

Thanks for the warning on the wood in Marsh- I actually ended up having a change in my work schedule force me to ditch my May 28th put-in date. I may go June 3rd instead- lemme know if you're into it. Illinois sounds awesome- can't believe I've never heard of it. Maybe a run on that around the weekend of the 5th if the Middle Fork again doesn't work?
