There is a possibility of a couple of us catboaters may venture over to the EF Lewis this weekend to try the Waterfall run. Has anyone been down recently that knows about the current wood situation?

i haven't run it in a few months, but the word is that the nasty wood below dragonsback has mysteriously disappeared. i'll see if i can track down someone who's been there recently and get some more beta.

hey shelly - I was there last weekend. Level was ~1,100 cfs on the gauge.
There is wood at the very end of the canyon section. After Hippy Johns rapid. It is very easy to get by in a kayak but a cat boat may be more work. It was a non-issue in a kayak, very out of play.
I'm pretty sure you could get by it though.
The higher the flow the less room you will have.

that would be fun to see! What line would a catboat take at Horseshoe? The right side death maw would be pretty hardcore... and the slots probably be too slotty?

Just to add to what Ryan said, the wood is at the very end of the canyon section but I believe that is just a little after Dragon Back rapid - not Hippy John. It is a big log that is mostly vertical on river right and you can easily see it once you are in Screaming Left.

I ran it 2 weeks ago, it was the first time I've been on it, so I don't really know about names of drops but there was no wood at all, at least that I noticed. I don't know how a cat would run horseshoe, unless it was waaaay higher (than 1100) the right side is only 5-6 ft wide, and the main autoboof line is 2 kayak wide slots that meet below a boulder, and something similar on the left too. you might have to do a "throw and go" type thing where you portaged the upper part (over the boulder) and just jumped in to drop the falls.

Awesome! Nice vid - I want to go the EF now. Thank you everyone for all the info, it's been truly helpful. From the photo, it looks like we can get past the log. Getting into Sunset could very well prove to be interesting but after looking at a lot of photos I think we will be able to figure something out. We'll definitely get a good scout once we get there.
