 Topic: 2007 Swims: Fess Up Posted: 09 Aug 2007 at 10:41am |
This topic was started recently on a site I used to frequent a lot, mountainbuzz.com.
It's entertaining (and sometimes educational) to hear about everyone's swims. So fess up and tell us about the times you've pulled the cord this last year....don't lie, we know it happened.
Here's mine, just copied and pasted from my original post:
I've had three swims this "season"....most I've ever had.
First: Swam on first ledge of Fall In The Wall, S. Fork Snoqualmie. Was worried about getting wedged in pin rocks.....this swim definitely should not have happened.
Second: Swam out of Initiation on the Top Tye. Sticky eight foot ledge below Box Drop. Got sucked back in, made a few attempts to get out then remembered the three others behind me that were about to boof on my head. Didn't want to risk it and pulled since there was a small recovery pool nearby.
Third: Just over a week ago. Flipped at the crux ledge in P.O.W. on Tumwater Canyon, rolled, flipped, rolled, sucked into large hole with no breath. Pulled with no air left.
I'm proud to say, I self-rescued myself and all my gear each time though. Nonetheless, I'm hoping for a better winter season.

shit, can't even count em all. some highlights though:
got utterly destroyed a couple times on the illinois. So used to creeking, I'd see over the horizon line, identify the rocks to avoid, and figure everything else was good to go. Oh yeah ... forgot about big holes!!!
Swam on that ledge below Norm's on the cooper, the one with the log acrss the canyon at the lip. too low for the clean boof, but better the swim than the elbow bashing some did.
lots more, but that's part of IKin'

The ledge a quarter mile or so below sidewinder on the farmlands. Was loose in my creek boat and my hipsnap wasn't getting effectively transferred to the boat. Problem has been fixed now, so we'll see what causes the next swim (probably my new C-1 conversion).

I swam on the eddyline at the top of Mel's on the Chilliwack, and after three failed roll attempts beneath Hussum falls this year. Not to proud of either of them. I have worked on my role and it is much stronger now.
I guess I should add the swim I had last night on Horshoe Bend.

1- First day down the N. Fork Sky. 7,000 cfs, flipped by the log jam right above the confluence. Hadn't really been boating for a while, and couldn't get forward to roll. Swam out, went over a pourover, straight onto a rock with my ass. Hurt for a week.
2- 1st time down White Salmon. Got stuck in the hole on river right at Waterspout. The leader (*cough**cough*bryon*cough*) said the hole was good to go and to aim for a little right of the green tongue. Surfed for a probably 10 seconds, windowshaded, tried to roll, windowshaded again, pulled the skirt, had to kick ridiculously hard to get out of the boat, and then kick more to get out of the hole. I was in the boat in the hole for about 30 seconds, and the boat stayed in for another 30 after I got out. Glugh.
3- Boulder Drop. I knew, at the beginning of the run that something was going to happen. Jay Kincaid was with us, and I just knew I would do something stupid. Flipped in the entrance, missed a couple rolls in the pool above the fence, pulled the skirt right above the fence, washed up against the rock that separates Ned's and the Needle, boat went through the Needle, I went through Neds, managed to swim into all the big holes below that, right of House Rock, and swam over the ledge at the bottom, and didn't notice until I looked back upstream at the rapid. I believe I spent 65%+ of that swim under water getting pushed around by holes and trying to not hit a rock and get air at the same time. Brett was right next to me the whole time, but... in Boulder, that doesn't do much good. I'm still kind of trying to get back on the horse. Sigh.

Pulled the cord, errrrr, yeah... I might have missed a few, but it went something like this: Klickitat - 3, Middle Middle - 5, Club Stretch - 1, Nisqually - 1, (between beginning of May and middle of June), Roll Class in middle of June, and then 4 swims on the Sky within a week of the class. Ever since, I've conducted quite a few lenghty inverted hydrological surveys for the USGS, and am awaiting my next out-of-boat beatdown with some trepidation. I'll double check my total with Tobin, since his memories of hauling my boat are a little more vivid than mine.

I swam on the sultan in Feb. We were playing at little paradise and I
had a few OE' tall boys was loose in the seat and my legs popped out of
the thigh hooks off a loop ... did a few attempts with a nice rock
brace then swam and sat on the side swearing as Brad ridiculed from
afar. Cheers Brad!

MIddle Middle—2
Sky—1
Ottawa—0
This season I've been getting back into boating after a long hiatus. My roll was giving me trouble. I had a weak hip snap and an overly mechanical set up. Also, my braces and other paddle strokes have been weaker than I'd like. After spending a week taking a class on the Ottawa River and not swimming once , I'm hoping I have things dialed in better now.
Of course, we're all between swims.

I'm pretty sure we had this conversation. You haven't gotten munched yet. And it's because you paddle that huge boat. You said you know its coming, and I agreed.

I took a playboat out for a weekend. Ran B.D. in it, not that it may count for much in your hair boating world. Besides, I don't have the exclusive liscence on the Jackson Rocker series.

i got munched in the drop above the spout on the top tye, first real
bad swim in 4 years. I later heard it is bad karma to kill
anything on the way to a class V. I smushed a mouse that had been
eating my food with a log the night before. Coincidence? no
way. i haven't killed anything since!
moral of the story:
don't hurt animals. if you do, go for a mellow run that day- and don't kill animals

I swam on the Foss after getting pinned on an underwater tree. That tree gave me a black eye and a scar under my eye as a souvenir.

I got ya all beat!!!
I swam last sunday on the middle streatch of the WS! But in my defense I got all my crap to shore by my lonesome! I was to hungover/ lazy to try to roll. Pulled instantly !!
Dont let anyone shine you on about your boat, Adam! I paddle with you a bunch and it aint the boat!! You styled BD and our little suprise section of tummy/!! In a playboat, just like Megan keeps telling ya, size doesn't matter
If boats made the kayaker we would all be paddeling Meags!!! Anyone that think different can pack sand !

Oh and
#2 was a 20 second no paddle upside down surf on grannies at 7k. I think riping skirt flushed me.
#3 was on CC lewis, I kept trying to roll up into a log, I couldn't figure out why it wasn't working ( shoulda gone offside)
I dont worry about not swimming, it scares me when I dont!

Sure?

Haha. Well yeah, it's true that I do prefer play boating.
On the otherhand, I definitely ran my fair share of class V and even some AW rated V+ this year and didn't swim any of it .

Have a great time in the Canyon.....I'm jealous.

What Canyon do you speak of?
Well I can honestly say that I am glad I swam on the sultan and not on
any of the harder rivers I have done this year. I learned a lesson
too... don't listen to brad when he is trying to explain how when you
pound a few tall boy's of OE, you will loop higher, its not true.
When I think of it I have styled plenty of local rated III+ and -IV this year there were some class III runs too but you guys are most likely not interested in those.

I know I a had a few, lets try to recount them. 1 on Lower Icicle on the ledge below the crux ledge. I plugged the hole and got stern squirted and sucked into the hole. Tried to role with my paddle against the rocks and blew a thigh brace and pulled the skirt. This led to a pinned boat right above the nasty wood/undercut sieve. Thanks to James and Larry for getting it out with one throw bag. It helps if everyone brings one *cough* James *cough*. 1 on Sharks Tooth of the Cooper. This was lap two of my first time on the Cooper. I missed the eddy at the top, got flipped in the ledge in the middle, missed a roll, then got my body pinned up against a rock and couldn't really move off of it. I reached around the rock and pulled the 'ol skirt. So, maybe just 2. I think there may be another but can't remember. I had a close call on Larry's ledge on FITW where hit the piece of wood sticking out at the top of the ledge on river left which dropped me sideways into the ledge. Similar to what POW said I was REALLY nervous about the pin rocks so I let go of the paddle and reached for my skirt almost immediately. After realizing this was silly I nailed a combat hand roll, flushed, and hand paddled in the eddy. Whew, what a way to start a run.
