Looks like the SF will be down around 400 cfs by Sunday. I'll be taking a few beginners out if anyone wants to join me.

Hey, mind if I join your trip? I will try to meet up with you at
the takeout at around 12:30 or so also. If you could call me as
well if plans change, that would be great!

I'd love to go to the SF, but I would need to carpool from the
Seattle area. Anyone heading up who wouldn't mind giving me
a lift? We could meet at my house or at Seattle Raft and Kayak.
Email or give me a call : 417-8912 ; gds@u.washington.edu
cheers,
Gabe

Hey thanks for the great time today everyone who came out to
the SF. That is a really fun run with a little of everything. Nothing
like a rainy day out on the water. Gotta love it!

Thanks to everyone(all 11 0f us) who made a rainy afternoon much more exciting than surfing football games. I really enjoyed bumping our way down the S fork.

I second that, it was a fun day. Thanks to everyone for being quick and efficient on the recues, I'm sure those who swam appreciate it. Also, I posted a note about the wood hazard below the weir on the description page and on AW's site. Make sure to warn people about it.
Thanks again to everyone.

And thanks to Tom for ditching his boat to fish me out of the weir woodstack. A potentially scary situation made better by being out with a great group!

After boating with such a large group, I realized the importance of a whistle to alert other boaters or get their attention at least.

I considered breaking up into two groups. It is hard to not get streched out in a large group, particularly on such a small river. There are not too many 11 boat eddies on the SF. Your right though, whistles are handy, especially when the river is noisy as is often the case. If nothing else, eveyone got a little rescure practice yesterday.

I was also a little concerned about the lack of whistles on
Sunday. I mentioned to Dave that I heard lots of yelling and
people trying to whistle with their fingers, but it is just no
substitute for the real thing. A couple of us with towing gear
were towards the back of that really long pack, and didn't know
there were swimmers until we came downstream and saw what
was going on. If I had heard a whistle, I could have gunned it
downstream and been of more help. I would have also loved to
hear a whistle when Lucy was in trouble below the wier.
A whistle is something everyone should have, from beginners
to pros, because it is always too loud to hear much else in a
rapid. Common hand signals and whistles are often all we
have to communicate with.

Maybe on that subject.....a lot of us I suspect have not been through formal training and kind of learn as we go (like me), things I have found most helpful in the last year:
Float bags - towing a boat without them is a real pain for the rescuer. A good thing to have if you want a higher success rate of recovery of your boat.
Spare paddle - I have been lucky enough to find my paddle when I have swam, but others in groups I have been in really benefitted from the spare paddle in someone else's boat until they either found theirs or made the take out.
Tow line - I have been on the benefitting end of this more than I have used one, but i carry one nevertheless.
Whistle - I carry one, but never had to use it so far.
Throw line - so far, not been needed, but I have one.
Rescue kit - I am guilty of not carrying one, but should. Probably leads into me needing to get a swiftwater rescue class under my belt.
A tasty beverage at the take-out. Critical. Absolutely critical.
Anyway, most of the above things I sort of figured out by watching others or experiencing the benefits of first hand....
Hope to see folks this weekend! I was part of the group that ran the SF before you and had to resist powerful temptation to run it a second time with you.
