right side of the logjam only has one log left before it''s completely opened up. Looks like an easy step over and back in, as opposed to the PITA left side. Other Issues Wood. The wood situation changes from season to season and sometimes the run is nice and clean, but logs have spanned the main channel in the past. Especially in the first mile be sure to keep a sharp eye out for wood hazards. There's a new gauge for the SF SKY: http://www.nwrfc.noaa.gov/river/station/flowplot/flowplot.cgi?SSSW1 We'd like to get this run correlated to it instead of Gold Bar for a more accurate reading, so if you run this section please note the level on this gauge and your thoughts on the level.

   Run Description

This section of the Foss is an easier introduction to this river than the section upstream. Still, it is pretty steep and continuous, especially in the first mile and you launch directly into boulder gardens with no warm up, so this run definitely still demands respect.

Below the put-in at the Trestle fun, technical boulder gardens start off right away and soon build up to the biggest drops on the run. The first mile or so is fairly continuous, especially at higher water.

At lower levels (under 7500 on Gold Bar) the intensity of the run is lower and you have more time to pick your way through the rapids and most rapids aren't harder than III+. Below 6000 cfs the run starts getting pretty bony, but ELF boaters can still run it down to about 4000.

As flows approach 10,000 or more the run definitely gets much more pushy and continuous and becomes more of a class IV run. A swim at higher levels could be serious and end up in lost gear or worse.

After the first action packed mile, the run slows down about, but good class 3 drops continue off and on all the way to the Foss River bridge. Take out here, or continue 2 more miles down on the Tye River to the Highway 2 bridge. On the Tye, you'll soon encounter a handful of nice class III-III+ boulder gardens followed by an easy class II paddle out with a few nice playspots.
