AccessHead out Bridge River Road from Lillooet, cross the Bridge River and keep going.... |
Putin DetailsContinue up the Bridge River Road. Just before the dam there's a dirt road that veers off to a recreation spot below the dam. Parking and river access here. |
Takeout DetailsCross the Yalakom River Bridge and continue until you find a turnout above the confluence on the Bridge River. Or better yet, continue up another mile or so. There is a low gradient section near the end of the run that had a number of wood issues. There's a couple different access spots that will get you out of the river before the woody section. |

Other IssuesNo gague available. Check level visually. Not sure when the "season" is but we ran it mid-July in a big snowpack year. In other years it has been too low in July. Can be run as a backup plan to the lower run if the lower is a bit too high. |
Run Description [Season: ]We stumbled onto this run a couple summers back when we headed up for a run on the classic section of the Bridge downstream. The water was much higher than we had run that section before, and quite a bit was coming down the upper Bridge river itself, which we'd normally seen as a 100-200 cfs trickle. So after some discussion we decided to check out what lay upstream.
It turns out that this is a great little run with some fantastic views. We had probably 400-500 cfs which was on the low side of good. It is similar to the section downstream, but with a bit steeper gradient and slightly easier rapids. Also, it has easy access, as it is roadside and you can road scout most of the harder drops. It's a narrow run, so keep an eye out for wood too. The rapids are mostly class 3 to 4 boulder gardens, read and run type of stuff, although getting out to look isn't a bad idea in a few places.
Also of note is the scenery. While the lower Bridge flows through an arid, wide canyon, the upper has an alpine feel. Mountain crags seem to rise right from the river bed to thousands of feet overhead.
Coming for a weekend to run this section plus the section downstream would make a fantastic trip, but the trick would be finding this section with enough water in it but not having too much water in the lower section. If this run is good to go, the lower run will have some stout rapids.
