  Fun Facts

Great to combo this run as you drive to or from the Nahatlatch over Kookipi Point Pass. Kookipi road connects with the Nahatlatch road just below the first lake.

Run Description [Season: Spring / Summer]

Big Silver is a pretty lengthy creek that is tucked deep in the woods between Harrison Reservoir and the Nahatlatch Valley. The Creek has several sections that make for a wonderful combination with any Nahatlatch trip although the Creek is several grades more difficult than the Nahatlatch.

Big silvers Upper run (canyons 1 & 2) start with a large 30-35 fool water fall that drops into a pool. This falls starts in a pool and the lip has water funneling into a sieved out abyss on the left with a smaller amount going right. At times wood may block the sieve on the left making the falls more enticing to run.

Below the falls the river begins with a few shallow rapids before entering the first gorge with a small 4-6 foot ledge. Run any direction. As you move through the first gorge you will find creekish boulder gardens and more small ledges. Scout and pick your lines as many of the boulder gardens have small sieves or pinches between boulders that spell entrapment.

The second canyon which features an amazingly tight canyon walls with rock stunning rock formations is shorter and easier than the first canyon. Shortly after exiting this second canyon you will come around a few bends and find a small sand/gravel beach on your right which depending on that years flows may or may not be there! Keep an eye out to not run into the third gorge which contains a much different class of whitewater riddled with more hazards and some mandatory portages that are not simple maneuvers. The bush wack is short through some BC Brush which will lead you to the road above. When in doubt head west and uphill.
