   Run Description

***Update 11/21/18*** - The river washed out in the Fall floods of 2017 and the road and is no longer accesible past Madison Falls Trailhead. Plans are in place to build a new road in 2020. The washout is actually the Elwha forming a new channel. It is pretty incredible to hike up and look at. The new channel flows through a strainer field that was formerly the forest. The old channel is mostly dewatered near one of the better rapids on the run.

This river contains one rapid that I would classify as IV- with everything else being III- or below. This is an absolutely beutiful river that runs through Olympic Nation Park. The one disadvantage to this is you have to pay a park entrance fee to run this section.

This is a great river to run if you are just starting to get into class IV stuff. The main rapid requires some technical movement but nothing overwelming and there is a nice pool after the rapid that would make it easy if someone swam.

On the way up to the putin, you can scout then entire rapid. About 300 yards after the bridge there is a pull off on the left side of the road (going up). There is a trail down to the river that lets you look at the last wave in the rapid.

The next pull out is about another 50 yards up and is a overgrown road leading to a bunch of trails down to the meat of the rapid.

The entrance to this rapid is marked by some cables that cross the river. It is right after the put in.

Also, there is a pretty good playwave at the put in coming out of the power station spillway.

The lower part of the run is fun but it can get bony in spots where the river fans out. There is also one part of note that is about a mile up from the entrance to the park. There is a huge tree down in the right channel of the river that can be easily seen from the road. The roots are facing upstream and the trunk runs parallel down the river. There is a lot of current pushing into the roots. It is easly to avoid if you know how a paddle works but in case you are taking someone down for there first time or something you should take note and make sure they know to stay away because it looks a bit unpleasant.
