Middle Matheny Creek
We put-in below the last class IV ledge as described in the OP Kayak
book. Rope/webbing and a carabiner would be very helpful for the
put-in and almost a requirement at the take-out. The run was clean of
wood obstacles. A couple of logs stretched across the river but none
that required you to duck your head at all at the level yesterday. The
Queets (Matheny Creek is a tributary) was at 9600 cfs when we did the
run. Many on the trip said that this was the best level ever for their
run on Matheny Creek (for me too, but that is definitionally true) and 5 in the group continued on to the class IV Lower Matheny Creek section.
Interestingly,
I believe that Bill's gang was doing the same run today and the Queets
was at 13000 cfs when they would have been doing the run. Perhaps
someone from that crew will post information on how much better/worse
things were.
Otter Boy added the following about the 11/26/2006 trip: Yes, we ran Matheny creek again the next day. It was probably 4-6
inches higher and would have been noticably more difficult for
beginners. The class IV section was actually a bit easier - cleaner
drops.
