| So I'm in Port Angeles and doing some research on the surf waves at the mouth of the Elwha, thinking I will go check them out after work. I get a lot of hits on Google talking about how the indians are very hostile to people parking there. Anyone know what the real story is? I will have to come back before the job is over and it would be nice to get an hour long surf session in, but don't want to get stabbed or such. What is the best way to get there without having an issue? |

Jimmy, don't go down to the Indian Res, Go over the Elwha river bridge and take the Place road about 2or so miles u go down a big hill towards the water and at the bottem stay right and park and walk down the trail to the surf or call me 461-4662.......hoover ------------- mike hoover |

It's not the "indians" you need to look out for. It's the surfers. Most of the native folk are good people. The surfers..... Well let's just say some are my friends but when it comes to a wave, well all bets are off.
The parking for the Elwah is not on the res. Give me a call 360 460-0572 and I can meet you. With this storm the other great place is Salt Creek. Larry, Cam's dad |

| Thanks for the beta. I don't have my boat this trip, I just took my wrist out of a brace and it is still stiff. On my next overnight trip I will try to bring it. I am working at the new river water intake site they are building for when the dam comes out, maybe I could paddle down to the end of the river and get a ride back after surfing? |

as others have stated above, park at the Place Road lot on the bottom right of the hill. take the left path to the beach. bring a helmet, it's rocky, was there on sunday surfing knee highs on the sup. know your surf etiquette, and stay low key if it's busy. the natives are good folks, some do pay to park on their land. they're currently netting salmon slightly upriver.
also try Salt Creek/Crescent Beach if the elwha isn't in, a much more forgiving sandy bottom beach, and you'll see more kayaks there. park in the free lot by the creek, best on medium level tide, although low tide has a nice barrel wave. |

| Don't drop in on other people, Wait your turn. Don't complain or whine about the break. Go over board on making sure the boarders know this is there spot and your not going to bring a crowd of paddlers with you. |

Bring your knife! Remember you are wearing a helmet, when they swing look down, body shots are absorbed by the PFD.
Board leashes work well for tripping them as they run away! Jack their waves and steal their women! They will respect you for it!  ------------- Sure? |

http://www.surfinghandbook.com/knowledge/surfing-etiquette/ Basics are, don't drop in on someone, don't cut in front of others, paddle back out away from where folks are surfing in, and stay away from crowded breaks if you're new, (go down further to a less crowded or empty wave). The Elwha is an advanced break, best to hit Salt Creek if new to surfing and you'll see other surf kayakers there. I rarely see boats at the Elwha which can be a series of steep fast breaking waves with a cobble bottom. |
