This is the Yotes's 2nd Annual Birthday Creekin' Weekend discussion thread. Please post any questions below.

Remember the actual Trip Details are located on the Yotes's 2nd Annual Birthday Creekin' Weekend | Trip Page

We're doin it again this year. Runs will be decided based on flows, but we'll be basing it around the Lewis drainage again. Anyone have any suggestions for camping?

I'm in, hoping not to crack a boat again this year.  Should be good flows around then.

You all can camp in my backyard. No really. It's huge 1/3 acre  in Portland. 'bout 45 minutes from EF Lewis.  The strip club next door has 6$ steak and egg breakfast. If we get really nutty, we can kayak Johnsons Creek. I think you can skirt the shopping cart on river left... Call me, I still don't have internet at home. Samaurai Mike 206-335-8561

Yotes, you better start doing your rain dance man!  Less than two weeks.  We need something to happen.  You have any ideas for a contingency plan if EFL and CC fall through?

Lanson,
The forecast is for rain all next week, hopefully its enough.   How about Hood River for a fall back?

Truss is in at good levels from what I hear.  sounds sweet as a plan b!

I understand the wood below dragon's back is worse, possibly unpassable at higher flows, and not obvious from the pool above dragon's back (via pdx list) ... keep it safe in there!

I just wanted to confirm that my schedule is clear that weekend, and I am in.  I can probably get two other boaters/creek boats in my Truck (the rack is being built, though).  I think Hood River makes sense for a fall back, but hopefully the rain will come...

EF Lewis and CC are the goals, Wind is a good backup plan. If things really come up Copper Creek is in the running, along with Hagen. There's so many options down there to choose from. I'd be in to trying to pull off a two creek day on sunday if I'm not too hungover.

Are you driving down? Leif might still have room in the Chili.

Hey since you guys (and gals) are looking at the EF.....What about the drop zone on Canyon Creek Washington, (use to live in Oregon...which also has a Canyon Creek ....weird). Also is there any info on what is happening on Canyon Creek Wash? (New wood, rapids....certain death?) Cheers-Thad

Well, Canyon Creek (Washington) might come in if the EF is at 1000....Ayway I am up here in Bremerton Wa (yes the place across the sound from Seattle) and am looking to relieve my itch. So I would like to hook up with local boaters.-Thad

So - two questions...

First, what's the plan...

Second, regarding carpooling, I can take 3 with creek boats.  Scott is going with me, so that leaves room for one more.  I could take another passenger or two if the extra boats went on top of Tobin's car.  The rack is coming, I promise.

So looks like I'll be coming down sat morning -- what's the meet time to catch a shuttle for the first lap?

-------------

Posted By: Tobin
Date Posted: 15 Nov 2007 at 11:45am

Where we will be is going to be level dependant, with the amount of rain coming this weeknd CC could be to high on Sunday, so it might be best to catch it Saturday?  Who knows?

Lets plan on meeting at Sunset Falls at 9:30. That will give me a chance ot drive upto the CC put in and look at the pillar, and it's not to early. With it getting dark at 4:30, we will need to get on the river by 10:30 to get 2 laps in.

-------------
Sure?

Posted By: slickhorn
Date Posted: 15 Nov 2007 at 11:54am
No way we'll be there by 9:30, so I guess we'll just hope we can catch shuttle or meet for the second lap.

CC is my top target, but not if it's high ... just have to see what levels do I suppose.

We'll be leaving southcenter 7:30 or so Sat, figure that puts us into EF Lewis TO around 11:30.

One thing I'd like to do if there's enough water is to do the run from the green fork to sunset on the east fork and combine it with the waterfall run.

Your wish is my command Tobin.  Signing the papers for the house in 2 hours.  Get the keys tomorrow afternoon.  Move all of "our" stuff in Friday night/Saturday.  Hopefully drive out Saturday night.  Boat Sunday.

Call me and let me know where you will be on Saturday night/what run is going on for Sunday.  I'm going to make it if I can.

There's a good group coming up from the 3cities too.  Think CB, Jrad, BrianM, Jim.  You guys will have a lot of fun.  Wish I could be there for the whole adventure!

I haven't heard any new stuff about any wood on CC.  Heard something about wood on EF Lewis, but I'm sure that Oly would know....and since you're crashing with them I'm sure he'll be able to tell you.

Cheers and beers,

Beta from PDX:

Re: E.F. Lewis Wood

There appears to be some confusion about whether the wood below
Dragon's back on the EF Lewis is new. This wood was NOT present, or
at least did not represent any hazard whatsoever that I can remember,
as of February 24th, 2007. It is possible that it was present last
winter and has now shifted. In any event:

The new wood that we and another group encountered this weekend is a
smaller log that spans the gap on river left that one generally
paddles through to get past the big logs that have been in the gorge
at the same spot for many years now.

The new log was NOT present on February 24th 2007, the last time I was
on this run. At this weekend's level (~1300) it was possible to limbo
under this new log, but it took some maneuvering and setting up time.
Therefore, you need to leave a lot of time between boaters going
through this spot.

One cannot see this new log from the eddy above Dragon's back, so it
is quite a surprise. The difficulty of getting past this new wood
will be greater the higher the water level. It's a potentially
dangerous spot right now, particularly if boats pile up or when the
levels are 1400 and above. Also, the new log's position is such that
there is a very high probability that any wood floating downstream
will get stuck here, worsening the hazard.

Bruce Schnapp

I drove by EF, CC, and Cedar.  Cedar looks good, EF looks ok, CC looks Big. The rain is tapering off down here, so that should give the aquifers time to build up, instead of flushing all the water into the creeks.  I think you all will have your choice of just about anything this weekend, the hardest rains are supposed to be past us.

Glad you guys had a good time.  Sorry I couldn't make it Yotes.  We didn't finish on Saturday until pretty late.  It didn't help that the hydrolic lift on the truck we rented broke, which set us back a few hours.  Anyways, I ended up just staying in town on Saturday night and went to the Hood River on Sunday.  BTW, the silt from last year's floods has been pretty much washed away and the river is fun again.

yeah this drop was good to go... although no one ran it because just out of this picture is a class V drop with a piton rock in the middle channel blocking any hopes of passage. Think they called it Tombstone rock.

Because these two drops had to be portaged , it made the "upper EF lewis run kinda lame as these were the standout drops.

The two sections below this Upper run were good to go however.

Hey fish, when we drove up above where you guys put in we found some quality drops and a couple of fairly steep sections between that creek and the actual confluence with the green fork (there's a bridge that's now blocked with a whole bunch of large rocks on the road leading over it). One in particular was a very sticky looking ledge with a potential line on the far right. The view of the river right side was blocked by a rock just downstream of the ledge, so I'm not sure how the runout is from there. Strong class 4 move if there's a clean runout, potentially tougher if there's something to be avoided in there.

Can't believe that huge dent popped out,   did the other 2 dents come out as well?

That tombstone drop was nasty!

The spot where it whitened up looks good!
