I'm heading up with a group from 8/17 to 8/26. We'll start in the Nahatlach area, head up to the Clearwater, down to the Bridge and end up in/around Whistler. I'd love to hook up with people. Let's start a contact list for people who will be up in the area this month.

I can be reached at 425 301 8538. Given how far out in the woods we'll be I suggest using text messaging rather than voice.

Bryon,
Hey,  I'm glad you are going to be up there.  I am going to try to arrange it so I can maybe stay a couple more days and paddle with you and your group after that weekend.

Hey, I'm interested.  Been with family for a couple weeks, though (in a hot, dry state), so will be looking for mostly III/III+, especially in Whister/Squamish area and possibly add some climbing in, too.  Any of you hoping to do some runs like that?  My dates are pretty flexible, including week days.

Trip Details might be changing. Just keep your heads up. I might be heading somewhere else with D1 if the flows change. I will keep the trip updated as the week continues.

D1 is officially calling it quits up at Whistler.

The flows on the Callaghan are now too low and the flows on the Cheak are low also. There are a few other creeks in the area that Dave is going to check out but the chances are that he will be heading back to the states by Thursday at the latest.

This means that whister is not going to be the spot to hit, and if anyone is really into BC we will need to plan a good destination out before just heading up.

How about Nahatlach/Chili/Bridge or any combination thereof?  Anyone interested?

John - Its now a nat/stien/bridge trip.

Bridge is most likely too low, and the Chili is definitely out. But Nat and others are good to go. I am going to head up there Thursday night and we will camp at the apocynum campground. Boat all day Friday and either camp again at the apocynum or somewhere else group depending.

James -- sounds great.  I'll see you at the campground Thursday night.

I don't think the bridge is ever unrunnably low.  There's a minimum fish release from the dam + flow from yalokum, we've gone in mid late august and been able to run the bridge before.

definitely minimum flow, but it's still fun splashy III mostly, with only a couple significant drops.

The Cheak is too low?  Now I am pissed...I tried to get a trip up there together...and now you are telling me it is too late this season?  What gives - it should be running for another month, shouldn't it?

I am game for a Nahatlatch trip - I'll probably take of Friday and return on Sunday.

Justin and I will head up from Bellingham Friday after work.  We'll probably get to the campground around 9pm depending on the boarder.  We have room for 1 other person if anyone wants to carpool, but we are bringing the dog!  We are game for other rivers, but plan to head home Sunday evening for work on Monday.    The Nahatlatch should be fun!

Leif,

You should have hit it up with Heather last weekend. It was at a great level.

Ok so here it is everyone.... the campsite we are going to be staying at is actually farther up the nahatlatch road on the lake. I like staying on the water.

We will be running the river all day friday and sat, so just find the van and you will be set. To get to the Nahatlatch follow these directions:

  1. Take Highway #1 east, the Trans Canada Highway, through Abbottsford, Chilliwack and on to Hope.
  2. Exit #170 at Hope and Fraser Canyon Destinations.
  3. Follow the signs through Hope town centre and resume on Highway #1 east through the Fraser Canyon. Do not take Highway #3 or #5.
  4. In Boston Bar, turn left opposite Young's gas station. Cross over the railroad tracks and the Fraser River and proceed north through the town of North Bend. Stay on the main road for around 11 miles or so. Maybe 12. The Canyon run take out is around mile 4, the canyon run putin is around mile 9, the playrun putin where we are camping is around mile 12 or 13 something like that.
See yas there!

My group is going to be in the area Monday and maybe Tuesday if anyone wants to stay later. Unfortunately family obligations keep me in town until Sunday.

I have a blue "tripod" seat someone left at the camp site.  Somebody please claim it, as it is remarkably uncomfortable.

I think that Tripod is Franz Horner's....

Thanks everyone for showing up. It was an awesome trip. The first run of the day was a bit un-organized and there were some improvements to be made for round 2. But the second go around was awesome. Some raft carnage, a few swimmers and some sweet lines through the Nozzle.

Great job out there everyone and a big thanks to Brad for hooking up the raft for the second run, it was much needed! The drive over Kookapei Pass is awesome. Great views awesome creeks and quite remote. Big Silver was sweet and certainly deems another visit with more water. Over all I had a blast and I hope you all had a good time too.

Till the next adventure!

So, Jon and I took the drive too - quite amazing.  A few frightning bridges, and some remarkable scenery.  The creek along the road prior to big silver main (clear creek?)  was pretty spectacular.  We stoped and looked at this one waterfal that was like a supersized version of crack in the earth - a big pourover heading into a headwall, turning 90 degrees, and pouring into another pool.  There were some kayakers running it (two trucks) - I'd be curious to know what the class rating was.  The lower kookapei looks runable with some more water, as well...

Leif... The two trucks were Me, Brad, Erik, Chris, Hilary and Matt doing the big silver. We left our cars down farther where we met up with Erik and the others.

Not sure which falls your talking about. There are alot on this section. The big 30 footer has changed and no one ran that. There is now this nasty nasty sieve sucker right at the top that is just scarier than scary... If that just weren't there!

You might have also been looking at the water falls just as Kookapei road connects with big silver or East Harrison FSR. That has not been run, and it looks to be impossible as all the water just pours into a nasty headwall that is back in a dark pocket.

The most impressive falls were the ones where kookapei connects to east harrison fsr.  Quite clear that they were unrunnable, but we took a closer look just because of how impressive they were.  There were two trucks parked below the falls, one at a large pool with about a 30' falls on river left, and the other truck down the way a bit, but prior to harrison east fsr intersecting big silver main.

My understanding was that you guys were on big silver (the book does say everyone walks the falls).  I thought I remember the creek along harrison east being clear creek, but I can't remember.

Ok so you are most likely reading some off beta bud.

Big Silver that is in the guide books is a III/IV play run with a 15 foot waterfall in the middle of the run. That is most likely what you are taking about. That is way way way down lower.

The portion where you saw the trucks was way up top. That is the Upper Stretches. The 30' Falls is the putin for that run and the other truck is where the take out is. Oh yea, I am the only person that really knows the right way from the river to the take out vehicle, so if you want directions let me know.

Ok, Looked at - maps.gov.bc.ca.  No name...  Clear Creek is the next inflow to the Big Silver south.  I did some searches, and I guess it is called big silver creek (as opposed to big silver river with the III/IV run).  Got this from TRL - pics match what I saw.  What part of this did you ran?

Yea thats the same run that we did. The only difference is that the big waterfall at the top is now different post highwater. There is now a large sieve at the lip of the falls with a good portion of water dumping into it. It is super scary. The boulder gaurding the sieve was changed or moved. It is now a pretty dicey move!

In trying to figure out what things were, keep in mind that I navigated back without a map...

The run looked pretty sweet, but what would you rate it at this level?  IV-V, V, V+?

I was amazed how deep the pool was at the bottom of the first waterfall you come to (under the bridge), and how clear the water was.  It must have had some incredible scenery in the canyon.

It was easily one of the more amazing gorges I have ever been in. Awesome ... just awesome!

I would say that at low water it is IV+, medium water it would be IV-V and high water it would be V. The only thing is that you can't have sloppy lines in some of the rapids. There are a few manky ones but tons of clean ones too!

James -

Good to paddle with you last weekend on the Upper Birkenhead.  This is Jerry from Atlanta.  Just checking out your website; very cool.  Looks like you still have good water in WA, and BC as well.  We're already planning our return to BC next year.  Maybe WA/OR in the Spring for some of those classic Cascade runs.

Take care,

Jerry,

Right on I was wondering if you guys would make it back ok and find our little spot here.

I am not sure if you have seen the footage and write up yet but here are some links so you don't have to hunt. i would love to check out some of the clips that were taken that day with the fancy Nikon Camera. That thing looked spendalicous!

Birkenmyhead - Birkenhead
Cashing out on Callaghan - Callaghan

Hope to hook up with you again on your next trip!

Nice photos, James.  Yeah, we all enjoyed the hell outta BC - fantastic place.  Our crew is compiling photos and videos of the trip, I'll make sure you're on the copy list.  Alex has a website, most of it will probably be posted there. He's currently editing.

I'm in Honduras right now, but not boating - work.  Thanks for the links, and I'll be in touch.

FYI - there is an unrunnable 30' falls in the middle of the III/IV run down low in the drainage.

Can't remember if it's before or after the 15 footer.

I'm bummed about the 30 footer at the put-in of the upper run.  That thing is fugly now.
