My group ran the Lower Tye on Sunday and had an interaction with people who own property beyond the put-in that is marked as private property.  She claimed that the forest service had abandoned the road an that they were now owners of the road that leads from the take-out up to the put-in and plan on installing a Gate at the junction.

It was unclear if what she claims is true, if anyone has experience with dealing with the forest service and determining if/how that transaction went down that would be great.

Keep in mind all of the signs they have posted only say "private property ahead".

The woman was a bit manic and wanted to insure that we were not blocking the road, shortly after driving past the vehicles we had parked well off the road.

That's fake news. Even if they abandon or decommission the road they do not transfer ownership. When's the last time you heard of a federal entity transferring land to a private citizen? Are these people now paying taxes on that new land? Even if there was a transfer which is totally doubtful they would inherit any historic easements. This would include unwritten practical easements like access to the river. She needs to step off. I have a real hard spot for people like that who throw around legal terms without any grounds. Washington land law just doesn't work the way she states. She is full of sh*t and probably tweaking it up out there and not into having people around. Any gate should be cut open and called into the authorities.

I just took the required 5 minutes to follow-up and talk to someone who actually knows the deal instead of just making assumptions.

That 5-minute conversation with the Skykomish District Ranger indicated the following:

1) Road is public, all the land along the road is public up to the "no turnaround" sign, and the landowner has no right to prevent access to either the road or the adjacent forest, including the camping area that is posted.

2) The forest service does not maintain the road, and the property owner is upset that road is getting trashed from public use. The Forest Service is currently working with the landowner to address the issue.

3) I asked the Ranger what a person should do if accosted and informed the road is private. She said "park where ever you want, you don't have to leave"
