I'm considering getting on the 9/2 release. It would be great if enough people sign up so it can happen. Don't sign up if you aren't sure you can go. This is a *big* day - 15+ miles of class iv/iv+/v - but very good stuff. The river description page gives a very good account of what you can expect.

Is anyone planning to just run the lower sultan tomorrow?

If you're comfortable running the lower (Last Nasty), you'll be fine on the Upper section. In fact, the Upper section has far less water in it than the Lower does... on release days.

Not that I can go next week, but how was the wood?

We only had 1 wood portage early on (before the diversion dam), but there was a lot of wood in play (esp in the 1st half).

How was the water temperature coming out of Spada Lake. Did most paddlers go with dry suits last weekend or was that too warm. Thanks for the info. for this weekend.

The water was super cold and the portage required you to wade waist deep for a few steps.   Air was hot, wear a drysuit, just put it on after the hike in. You will be on the water for several hours.

email from Snohomish County:

"Due to fire danger, the Sultan Basin is now closed to all public recreation until further notice. This decision includes the cancellation of the whitewater release originally scheduled for Saturday, September 9th. The District apologizes for any inconvenience caused by this decision."

I asked Keith Binkley if Snohomish County PUD could postpone, rather than cancel, the release. He said, in couched language that the PUD would explore options to do just that. Based on his language, I have a feeling that a little direct pressure would help the PUD find the options to do just that. His email address is: mailto:KMBinkley@SNOPUD.com - KMBinkley@SNOPUD.com

Definitely wear a drysuit if you have one, or a thicker layer with your drytop. The water flows from the bottom of the dam, which is quite cold. I'd love to do it again this fall.

I replied to the cancelation email and received this reply from Keith:

"We will explore options for rescheduling this event. If we do, it will be after October 15th."
