yes. There are two races actually. Saturday is the Canyon Creek Race, and Sunday is the East Fork Lewis Race. Fastest individual time from start to finish. |

See http://www.northwestcreekcomp.org/index.htm for more information. April 16th will be the race on the EF Lewis. Canyon Creek Race will be on the 17th. Camping at the EF is good. The races are individual timed runs with kayakers starting at staggered intervals. There was a mass start last year on the East Fork, they may do it again this year. There are short, 8'6" and under, and long (anything over 8'6") boat categories. ------------- |

There will be camping options like last year at Sunset Falls Park. The parking is different and is supposed to be regulated at the turn out by the Merwin Bridge. Parking is at the Forest Service Center and Shuttles are being run.

How do people hike in to the bottom of hammering spot? Is it easier to paddle in from the botom of the lake and then hike to champagne/hammeringspot, or is there some other access point? ------------- The line will become apparent 978-273-7723 |

I've hiked in to recover a friends boat and its not easy... and its all on private land. There is on home that backs up against the river from Kahuna to the lake. Its very confusing and its all on private land.... so I would recommend a paddling in, its much easier.

What's the skinny on the gauge? There is a red star that says "measured" then a big blank.. and a spike. I was going to head down for the race Sunday, I'm not racing and don't know if I feel like a high water run right now, especially if the race is called due to high water... Anybody have any feelings on what will happen?

It was stomping but really user freindly. The holes were hungry but all the other rapids boated really well. Kahuna was handing out some ugly lines with a bunch of people walking it.
It was really a perfect level for the boulder garden. BTW, the ledge at the bottom of the boulder garden no longer exists. not sure how it got blown out but, it's now just a bunch of rowdy whitewater after the rooster tale. There were a bunch of rafts out there and several had some interesting lines at champagne and hammering spot. Quality day of whitewater. ------------- The line will become apparent 978-273-7723 |

Another thing of note, the Canyon Creek at amboy gauge might not be accurate any longer. On Sunday it said that it was 1500 cfs, but the locals all said that it was much higher. To me it felt more like 2000, but it's hard to say.

There are a couple of options for portaging. In a kayaks people were doing a combo of seal launching and walking up and around and coming down to a the peninsula on river right at the bottom of the pool.
As far as rafts go it's really easy. Hans and I walked it and lowered the boat down the cliff on river right from the scouting platform. After the boat is in the water there is a little ledge and some low 5th class climbing down to the boat. Having a painter on your boat makes this a lot easier, a kayaker held the painter while hans and I scrambled down to the raft and once we loaded up the kayaker tossed down the painter. If a rafter has any scrambling experience this portage is really easy. Rowing it would go pretty good with the exception of campagne and hammering spot. In my opinion the high flow we had was ideal for inflatables, no little sticker rocks to throw off your line and padded out. Champagne was the scariest rapid of the day due to the fast moving pool above hammering spot, the stompy hole at hammering spot, and the fast water moving into toby's. There were a bunch of raft swims here due to bad lines at champagne and hammering spot, all went fine but if you couldn't make it to shore above toby's it might get ugly. Also don't get into the right eddy between drops, this resulted in a bunch of bad lines because of the volume of water pushing against the wall. ------------- The line will become apparent 978-273-7723 |
