Topic: Chelan Gorge Releases Posted: 25 Aug 2010 at 3:56pm |
Paddlers, we need your help!!! This September, the Chelan PUD will be releasing water through the Chelan Gorge Sept 11,12 and also on Sept 25,26. They will only release water, if at least 6 people sign up (and show up) the morning of the releases. This past July we had scheduled releases, but due to lack of interest, the PUD said they would not release any water. I've informed Tom O' Keefe that moving the July release to later in the summer, would garner much more support from kayakers, as other runs will have dried up, he agreed, and is working to move the future July releases to a later date. For the past 10 years AW has worked very hard to secure these releases for us, and it would be a travesty not to take advantage of them. In order to maintain our boating rights in the Gorge we need your support! If after the 3 year flow study (this is the second year) they determine a lack of interest in kayaking the gorge, our rights to the releases could be lost. Please consider coming out this year, (all rapids are easily portaged if you looking to just experience the gorge) i'm reserving a large group campsite near by, and encourage all who are able, to come and and support this great run, and protect this release for future paddling generations. Thats all... just come paddle To see pics of the entire run here http://golakechelan.com/%212009/July/Kyak/To register go here http://www.chelanpud.org/7077.html

I'd take a crack at it if IKs were allowed.

All info is at the Chelan PUD website here http://www.chelanpud.org/whitewater-boating.html look at the right side menu, it has flow info, past videos and pics, all the info you could want. I'll be attending the first release on Sept 11, 12th Thanks for signing up everyone!

Can't play my hand yet- waiting to draw another card or two from the deck...
But if I can make it, likely it'll be the later release weekend...

"All boaters must be at least 18 years of age and are required to pre-register and complete the reservation process"... buzzkill.

Since no else has, I want to reiterate that this is a fairly difficult and dangerous run. It should not be regarded as a training or step-up class V and should not be approached with the attitude that you can "portage your way down". In the one run I did I saw at least a couple close calls that could have been a lot worse.

yup. ain't no "stepping it up" kind of run. More like "Step up to the plate 'cuz in here you need a good batting average" ---it ain't little league, and boaters that go in there need to look good. We are under a miroscope in there (or rather, multiple telephoto lenses.) A good example should be set, and a good show made of our appearance. If you can't leave your sh*t show at home, don't come.
whatever. I probabaly can't make it this year- too much sh*t goin on. Maybe though... just maybe...

That all said!
I would like to get a round of applause for Fish (Scott W) for his communication and efforts to continue this project!
As we saw earlier this year, the releases are not a given - there is a minimum # of PRE registered boaters required in order for the release to occur.
If you 'know' you can paddle this stretch and have the time - register and lets keep the study going!
The information gathered will only benefit the paddling community.
To reference JP - the boaters will be under a microscope - Behave

Anyone want to car pool out to Chelan this weekend? I can drive my truck but would like to at least have one other person to split gas with. I am coming from Kirkland. I am flexible and can head up there either Friday or early morning Saturday. I am registered to paddle both days. I am at work all day today and all night tonight so the best way to get ahold of me is to text and I will get back to you. I can also do email but it is slower.

Thank you to all who have signed up, i just got confirmation that we have enough paddlers to justify the release! So far there are 12 paddlers attending. So stoked!!!
The meeting area has changed from last year, so be sure to check the PUD website for the new location. Check in is 9:00-10am, and the release will start at 11. Saturday will be 360 cfs and Sunday will be 425 cfs.
Still trying to sort out a camp spot, does anyone have any suggestions?

Props for sure. Joe -- are IKs excluded from these flow releases? -b Yes, it's harshell kayaks only. Maybe after the test phase it'll open up more.
