Topic: Chelan Gorge Releases Posted: 01 Jul 2010 at 9:24am |
The July 10th & 11th releases have been canceled this year due to overspilling at the dam. The July 24th &25th releases are still on. see below
Scott - I wanted to let you know that we are cancelling whitewater boating on the Chelan River through the Gorge on July 10 and 11. Unfortunately, as I am sure you can appreciate, we are in a balancing game with late melting snow pack, maintaining the level of Lake Chelan and spilling water. We have determined that the late run off requires that we spill from 2500 to 6000 cfs which of course is well above the 300 to 475 cfs required for the whitewater boating runs to maintain the lake at the required level and prevent flooding. Right now, we actually are 280% of average snowpack above Lake Chelan! This has certainly been a crazy weather year, hasn't it? The July 24 and 25 runs are still on the schedule as planned, so I am hoping that you will be able to change your plans and come on that weekend instead. I am sorry about this change and I hope that the 24 and 25 will work for you. Have a super weekend, Scott! Carpool for pictures?
I won't be running it, but will be hiking along with my camera. Keep me in the loop of plans. Sick shots to follow

I bet that canyon is insane at those big flows, maybe they can do a later release to cover the early one that is cancelled?

Hey Everyone, If you want to paddle the Chelan Gorge this weekend, please fill out these forms. Both the reservation form, and liability waiver. The releases will be on Saturday and Sunday, Saturday being the lower water level of the two days. The rapids are all easily portaged, but the ones that are there are demanding. Come on out and enjoy, the air temps will be near 100, and the water temp is 72 degrees!

From the Chelan PUD last night. I am sorry, but we are canceling this weekend's runs on the Chelan River through the Chelan Gorge. According to the agreement negotiated with American Whitewater, there must be at least 6 people registered to participate in the event, by the close of business (5:00 pm) on the Thursday before Saturday/Sunday runs (that is today). Unfortunately, there are only 5 people registered at this time and the deadline for registration has passed. I hope that you will consider us again at our next runs which are September 11, 12 and 25, 26. Thank you again for your interest in kayaking through the Chelan Gorge. I hope I'll see you in September! Kris

Yeah, I'm shootin for september. Rafting will be fading off, and I bet I can break away...
July just not in the cards for me this time around.
..and honestly? Since we opened up Hussum Falls to rafting (july 9th or when ever it was), I have almost forgotten of my lust for hardshell boat'n. Up till then I'd been Trussin it and hittin the LW pretty strong. Now it's all about "All Forward... Nice smooth strokes guys-paddle in synch! All forward... GET DOWN!"
Running the falls in a raft with custies is way more exciting than kayaking. Or at least a stimulating change of pace.
Anyway, someone call the moderators! This kid is off topic!
Hopefully I can squeeze in some Chelan goodies this fall!

JP, the best part is if you have any custies that were pissing you off, you can smack them on the head with your paddle when you hit and they'll never no it was on purpose.
