Topic: Humpback & Kayaker e-mail? Posted: 27 Apr 2010 at 9:01pm |
Real or not real? Photoshop or Adobe? What you all think?
Date: Wednesday, April 7, 2010, 11:52 AM
Folks, this is for real!!!! This happened in the last two weeks. The spawning Herring are in the Sitka Sound and when they are in, all the predators arrive to feast. Dr.Kraft happened to be in the wrong place at the right time!!! The Whale was coming up under the schooled herring which the whale had schooled with a circling motion driving the Herring into a ball through which the whale comes up through. This is a once in a life time photo and I wanted to share with all of you. Life is good in Alaska !! AMJ Sent: Tuesday, April 06, 2010 6:43 PM Subject: Humpback and kayaker
Hi all. I couldnt resist sending this one along. The photo was taken at the entrance to Katlian Bay at the end of the road in Sitka . The whale is coming up to scoop up a mouthful of herring (the small fish seen at the surface around the kayak). The kayaker is a local Sitka Dentist. I havent talked to him yet, but havent heard of any injuries out of the experience.
Enjoy, Steve Yep, that is me in the picture. Yep that is a whale that was just around the corner from the ferry terminal. "Paddle really fast" is the only thing I could think of at the time.. Also thinking that I don't look like a herring, don't smell like a herring but with the same herring instinct of "get the hell out of the way of that big mouth!!" Still living to tell yet another story.. Rich K

Sorry, thought I could post the picture too, guess I don't know how. The picture shows a Humpback Whale with his mouth wide open just surfacing with a Sea Kayaker passing through his mouth. Very interesting picture it is, wish I could have passed it on.

I don't know if this link will work, but if you copy and paste it should take you to the origonal photo of the whale whithout the kayaker. I tried to put the actual photo in my last post but it didn't work.

Wow, that is really a crappy job of matting the new image. Doesn't anyone know how to use photoshop?

Wow Leif...
I used print screen and paste into paint, then the little cut out tool... I was trying so hard.
Not half as hard as you try to make enemies.

Wow, wow travis. Are you now on the "won't boat with me" crowd, too?
Just making a joke about the low image quality. If that makes me an enemy, then so be it. Can't make fun of anything around here without people's panties getting all twisted up.

It's just the condescending tone in your joke that makes it not funny. However, you do have a lot of experience twisting panties, possibly the best!

And for the record, I've definitely seen this photo before and been confused about whether or not it was photo shopped. I think they did a good job, although intuition tells you that it couldn't be real.... or could it?

Gordon. No condescending tone. If I wanted to convey a condescending tone, you'd know it.

HOPEFULLY!! We all walk and paddle (between the jaws of whales) on this planet together at the same time, so we are more or less all the same age!!
when Travis posted his freestyle air time into the mix, that's when it really got funny, even if it doesn't meet Leif's exacting graphic design standards!!
sorry Leif, your attempt at humor just didn't come across as funny-not trash'in you, just stating the obvious.
What tips me off immediately about the original photo of the sea kayaker in the jaws is not the finer points of photoshop wizardry or lack thereof, but this:
If I was leisurely tooling along in my sea kayak and that really happened, I'd instantly start paddling fast enough to win two Robe Races back to back! That guy doesn't seem very concerned to have a pair of jaws closing around him. He's way too relaxed.

I agree J.P!! I'd be crouched or in an aggressive paddle possision for SURE!! I rarley believe pics on the internet or on t.v. I barley believe what people tell me, hardly ever believe what I read and almost never ever believe what I think! I do believe in Rob Mikkibon.. he really does exist!!

I think you guys are missing the point. it's clear that the pic is real, but it definitely took a master with photo shop to remove the boater and paste in some realistic looking water.
I think it is a conspiracy to make sea-kayaking look safe. if word got out that you could be eaten by a whale, you would never sell another boat.
